My case was a dented locker however. Dent stayed there for years.

My son was being bullied by a group of 3 or 4...school didn't do anything about it so we told him to defend himself and taught him how. He was suspended for fighting back! Principal was no help so we pulled him from that school and sent him to one in the district my hubby worked for. He never had a problem again, but at least he knows how to stand up for himself and his beliefs to this day!

Teach your kids how to defend themselves! They may never need it, but then again, there may come a day when they do!!

I taught my kids to never respond to the first punch, but if it happened again, let 'er rip.

My dad taught me that it doesn't matter if you win or lose a fight with a bully, you just have to hurt them and they'll find easier pickins when they go looking to be a bully next time.

I was a skinny, geek kid who was picked on until 9th grade. A guy tried to reach up my skirt (we wore 'em short back in my day) in the school library. I backhanded him, hard, once. He went over the table behind us and ended up with a broken jaw and leg. The bullies never bothered me after that.

It's so disappointing when you hear about these cases of the school either lightly disciplining or outright ignoring these bullies, then suspending both kids when the bullied one inevitably has to fight back for himself. On the other hand, a lot of times these bullies are very, very good at avoiding the eye of teachers when carrying out their crimes.

Regardless, thanks to video evidence in this case it is OBVIOUS who is the aggressor here, and the lesson for the children is even if you are just standing up for yourself out of pure self defense, you will be punished. I'm afraid it will lead to other children simply taking the abuse out of the drive to follow the rules and not get in trouble themselves (which I know I did on occasion, until my early growth spurt made me a harder target).

It's a difficult situation, but like so many things, this is one more rule that simply doesn't work to fix the problem.

Note to self: do not make Squirrel Girl mad.

The mother of the bully said her son deserved what he got, and that she had quite a lot of words to say to him. (I don't have a link to the video handy.) And that she hoped he would apologize to the boy he was bullying.

I agree with what Taskiss said. It's always good to fight bullies, even if you lose. I think most bullies enjoy tormenting people but on a day-to-day basis they don't enjoy sustaining injury or facing the risk of it. Even a weak opponent is a very real threat in a fight.

I am a fan of "never throw the first punch, but make damned sure you throw the last one." I can only hope my daughter learned that lesson as well as I tried to teach it.

This was originally quoted by Australia's Seven network as meaning the woman wanted the other (bigger) kid to apologize. The facts didn't come out until a day later, when she called and explained that it was her son she wanted to apologize. Fox picked up on the original story and apparently never corrected it.

Might as well go to the root of the problem.
