I wished for no more cat stink and no more pain in the butt cat litters to clean and worry about. And my wish has been granted. Long live Jambi!

We decided we were tired of cleaning cat litter boxes and that no matter how often it gets cleaned, it still tends to smell. Many cat owners get used to the smell, but it's there lurking in the shadows and taunting your guests. We finally said we weren't going to take it anymore so we broke down and forked out the cash for the Cat Genie.

So far I am pretty impressed with the thing. It was not difficult to install and it takes up only slightly more room than a standard "large" cat litter box with a hood. The entrance lip is only about half an inch, to an inch higher than a standard litter box (even lower than that if you don't buy the hood accessory). Based on screenshots I was afraid it would sit higher than it does.

I was also worried about how loud it was, based on the home made videos I've seen of the thing. I was actually pleasantly surprised to find it was quieter than I was expecting. This was something I was afraid I would not be able to sleep through, since our master bathroom is where the litter box is and there is no door separating the two rooms, just a curtain. With no door to an adjoining room, I'd say the noise level is on par with a washing machine that is several rooms down behind a closed door. Easily sleep-able through.

But, even so, my fears for not being able to sleep through it weren't a problem anyway. You can have it set to either perform it's cycle at a specific time or to wait until the box gets used (it senses when the cat comes and leaves). And on top of that, you can have a sleep setting on it, so it won't ever run during that period of time.

It does take 30 minutes to go through a complete cycle, but it cleans everything. It gets rid of all waste and thoroughly washes, sanitizes, and dries the granules. The waste breaks down via septic system and gets deposited either directly into a toilet or out a laundry drain. For me, flushing a toilet is a small price to pay than having to deal with the mess I've had to deal with for years.

We spent some time researching what self-cleaning box to get. Out of all the reviews of self-cleaning litter boxes, this one got the best reviews. There is a 90 day complete refund money-back guarantee, which is also what helped sell us the product. Three months should be plenty of time to figure out if the product is worth it or not. The two year warranty is also nice.

The only negative reviews we came across were from owners of a multi-cat house. I can see the cat genie not being ideal if you have probably 3+ cats, especially if it's set to wash immediately after a cat goes. If a cat has to wait to use the litter box, there can be problems. I imagine it might be lessened if you go with the once-a-day cleaning.

As for upkeep cost, you do have to purchase sani-solution packs in order to keep the granules clean. Each pack will last either 120 days if you have it set to clean at a set time, or double that length of time if you set it to clean itself right after the cat uses the box. You may have to replace granules as they slowly deplete from either being tracked out of the box or washed out (though the cleaning arm does a good job of shaking them off as best it can).

For me, the cost came out to be less than what I pay for cat litter, liners, and filters. But the fact that there is no more mess or stink ever again is what really makes the price of any upkeep absolutely negligible.

Not sure yet. We just got the thing today.

Our cat has never had a problem when you make major changes to it's litter location, so the "slowly inch your litterbox to the new location" isn't going to be a big deal.

They recommend you run the first test cleaning cycle while the cat is asleep, and they also recommend you keep your old litter box nearby (but to NOT clean it... the worse it gets, the more likely the cat will want to use the nice, fresh, clean genie). And they also recommend to have it set for the wash cycles to be manually executed until the cat starts getting used to going in it.

They also recommend to act completely oblivious to the genie while it's doing it's cycle, as if it's nothing at all. Bringing more attention to the cleaning cycle, even if you think it might be helping the cat "get used to it" might be doing more harm than good.

There's a whole pamphlet that it comes with dedicated to methods to try to get your cat used to it. I expect that with our cat and how adaptable she has been, that it won't be a big deal. But, I'll be sure to post my failure and frustration 90 days from now if the opposite rings true.

I've had my Cat Genie for about a year. It is the single best thing I have ever bought in my entire life.

The Very Important Cat Club helps a lot with the costs of cleaner and such.

We bought the Litter quitter for our cats and have been training them up... this does look like a better solution though...

And really needing to go when one of the cat's on the can, can get slightly awkward...

Taamar and I have eyeballed this thing several times in the past, but keep getting hung up on issues like needing to take care of other expenses first or not having an appropriate space in the house. Someday ...

Huh. We have a few too many cats for that to work, I think. At the moment, four, although we only intended to keep three. (It's a long story, the house came with about a dozen.)

Nice idea, though, and glad to hear it works. I've always thought they were a bit gimmicky, but to hear that people own them and actually use them is cool. Might be worth it to try one and see how it works; even just to lessen the smell of two boxes would be worth it.

Of course, we frequently just kick them out of the house and let them go nature-potty (sometimes in my garden, natch).

I am intrigued by your ideas and and wish to subscribe to your newsletter, Numbuk/Sean.

How well does it work? That's the only question I have. Is it truly something that we don't have to fiddle with or clean manually?

Sean may be able to answer this one better than I can. I do know that some of the earlier models required a little bit of hand-cleaning every few months. And I know that some people experienced problems with the feces not breaking down fully and eventually gumming things up. The solution? Plop a small rubber superball down into the hopper and it helps grind it down. In fact they now ship units with said superballs because of how effective it is.

We'll see how things go with me. My hopes and expectations are high.

For owners of multiple cats, you must try the litter kwitter. http://www.litterkwitter.com/en/index.php

Our cats took about 4 month to get completely trained, but this truly is the no smell, no litter, simply flush the toilet option.

Occasionally one of our cats (the silly male one) doesnt aim right and gets it on the side, but thats something easily cleaned up with a wet paper towel :neko:

You never have to touch it under normal conditions. The only thing you have to do is replace the cleaner, run a maintenance clean every few months, and pour in some more granules if it gets low. No hand cleaning involved at all unless you have weirdo cats like mine.

I've had to clean out the grinder a couple times because one of my cats is batshit insane and eats the strings off my sweat pants. She also eats plastic wrappers if I don't immediately throw them away and sometimes ninjas them. So, I've had those things stuck in there a couple times. Thankfully the cat genie is extremely durable and it didn't do any harm to it at all.

But yeah - no dealing with cleaning or dumping litter ever again = best thing EVER. It also massively cuts down on any cat smell (which is there with litter boxes no matter how clean you think you keep them). I've had people be surprised when they saw my cats because my apartment doesn't smell like cat at all.

Well, after the first failure (not really a failure, she just went in her old litter box instead) I decided to just have the cat go cold turkey. I removed her old litterbox completely and also removed all bathmats and rugs (anything tempting).

This morning? The cat genie had indeed been used by the cat. Success!

We tried this with our first two cats, many years ago (with litter boxes and plastic wrap). One took to it OK, the other not so much. Then we moved out of that apartment to go overseas, left the cats with someone for a year, so they forgot, I think. But what's hilarious is that every time we'd move to a new place - next two apartments and two houses, the good cat would use the toilet. Just once. I swear, I'd hear peeing, and I'm the only person in the house ... Go around the corner into the toilet, and there he was. But he'd never do it again, just once.

Our cat is still using the genie, and I've got it set to automatically run after the cat's used it. I am 100% sold on this thing.

Adaption took only 24 hours for our cat.
