As an aside, when I was growing up in Nebraska, we had a lot of trouble with local dogs all getting together and killing various rancher's livestock.
We had an extremely large and very mean billy goat, which we tied to a tree outside the main pens, on a long chain.
He was killed, of course, and brutally - however, my father and some of the other ranchers found and shot 12 injured dogs the next day. There were no further livestock losses after that.
