Because the results are so entertaining...

(Or, perhaps you're name is Ranelagh, and it really is an improvement.)

Most of the time, its pretty convenient for mobile devices. I get the occasional typo with homophones or with apostrophe usage when I'm not watching too closely.

I think the real question is why don't people at least glance at what they typed before hitting the send button to make sure they didn't tell their mom they ****ed a goat or something. I always check mine before sending.

Several hundred million people sending text messages and IMs every second are bound to let a few things slip through the cracks.

I actually tried to turn it off for a while. It was just as annoying to have it off, because onscreen keyboards are teh suck for typing accuracy. So autocorrect is just this side of tolerable for me, but still annoying whenever I use words the software doesn't like.

Because it's useful? Just because people don't pay attention to what they're typing doesn't make the tech shitty. Even if it tries to auto-suggest a word I don't want or don't mean, a single tap says, "no, that's not the word I want" or, "yes, that's right, let's continue".

Auto-correct is worthwhile but you have to get used to it.

I get this less often because I like keyboards that let you swipe patterns to create the word you want. There's programs like SlideIt and Swype, but I still prefer the no-longer-developed Shapewriter which you can download and install for free if you can spell and use google.
