Ever go to Nevada? I want to say they had it in stores in Reno when I was there last, but it's been ~10 years since I was there.

Responding to your edit-

In that case, you *don't* want absolute ethanol. Absolute ethanol contains benzene, which probably will mess up your finish, and is toxic as well.

You want 95% ethanol, which is an ethanol/water mixture- the small amount of water shouldn't mess up your finish too much.

Hence, 190 proof everclear.

(Isn't the furthest you can distill alcohol just over 95% anyway?)

Last I saw Everclear here in Washington was over in Pullman (I think it was/is available for sale in Idaho) and it was being forcefully ejected from my stomach, making a nice spray pattern as it decended from the third floor balcony. It kinda went black after that, and 20 years later I still haven't found my car keys.

I stopped by our local state run liquor store tonight on my way home and talked to the Manager.

It turns out they actually stock 190 proof Everclear in 700ML bottles for $13, and 200 proof ethyl alcohol in pint bottles or gallon jugs ($35).

I just need to download a form the state liquor control board site and send it in with a $5 fee to get a permit to buy it. I just need to let them know how much I plan to use and what I need it for.

Sooooo problem solved. =)

I'm not a chemist, and don't pretend to understand this stuff, but it was explained to me that you can distill down to pure ethanol (200 proof in the US) using 'advanced techniqes', but as soon as you expose it to the environment, it will begin to absorb moisture from the air and find it's way back down to 190 Proof/95% or so.

In my case, the 190 proof and 200 proof are about the same price per unit. Since the Everclear 190 comes in cool glass bottles (as opposed to the plastic jugs for the pure ethanol) that can be re-used for storing mixed shellac, and it's working for me, I'll probably stick with it.
