Quote:
CAEN, France - A French court has fined a preschool teacher $1,450 for biting the cheek of an allegedly unruly 4-year-old during a bathroom break.
The court in the Normandy town of Lisieux handed down the fine Wednesday over the March 2007 incident in the nearby town of Houlgate.
The teacher had denied the boy's claim and said he had been misbehaving. The ruling came after a medical report showed a bruise on his face.

The school reprimanded the 48-year-old teacher weeks afterward.

In keeping with French judicial practice, the court didn't identify the woman because she is still teaching.

This, I do not understand.

I'm not saying the little **** didn't deserve it(I mean, he's 4. He probably did all kinds of nasty things). But if a teacher loses her cool and resorts to biting, there's something wrong with the teachers. Open palm slap to the face would have been sufficient, I believe. Followed by detention or suspension for being a piece of **** 4 year old.

I was joking, Raltar.

Four year olds bite people on occasion. Adults shouldn't.

Their country - their rules. Here I would be amazed that a teacher who bit a kid kept her teaching credential, but hey, they're French. We rarely understand why they do things.

Well, I don't entirely agree. Adults shouldn't bite other people's children....

When my son was almost 2 years old, I got tired of him biting me on the arm when I picked him up. So one day, I bit him back.
He never did it again.

A thumb pressed firmly (no nail) works just fine for dogs. It is especially nice because they cannot bite you while you are doing it (they have an invuluntary reflex that forces them top open their mouths when you do it). I've never interacted with a dog I could not stop biting behavior since I learned this trick.

That's how my brother has taught his son to not bite.

Where do you press the thumb, Gorse? On their nose?

In the "ha-ha, only serious" department, I either read a book or watched some TV show that was not far off this mark. If you watch a mother dog scold its puppies, it will "bite" across the bridge of the puppy's nose. You also see the "alpha" dog in an adult pack bite that way when it doesn't like something that its subordinate is doing. Apparently, mimicking this gesture is very effective at establishing dominance.

Sorry about that, under their tongue / the bottom of the mouth. They tend to twist their head to get free then lick your thumb. The slow ones take two or three times.

I don't know if you ever read "Julie of the Wolves" (its a juvenile book, but was a good read) but it was about a girl who lived with wolves and they constantly mentioned biting on the nose to assert dominance.

I alpha'd my dog by picking her up a lot and occasionally sitting on her, I never had to bite her :)

Silly thing still thinks I'm stronger than her.

Yup. That's my secret, too. Also works with cats in a slightly different manner. When a cat is starting to get "bitey", I shove a finger down it's throat. Similar to the method described with dogs, it sometimes takes several applications but I usually end up with a cat that isn't terribly interested in putting it's mouth on me.
