I actually like Monte outside of Hellfire(though, I have seen him follow someone into another thread outside of Hellfire and be a dick). If politics are taken out of the equation, he can be a good guy. But there's something about that subject that just completely changes him into something that isn't pleasant. I hate it. I don't like the idea of telling someone what they can and can't do. But sometimes you have to go with the needs of the many over the needs of the few. I'd prefer he didn't get outright banned, just Hellfire banned, like before. I'm fairly certain most people will agree that he isn't bad outside of Hellfire(with a few exceptions).

But, what the **** do I know? And why do you even care?

He's all right as long as he's not in that forum. I even like him, which is why I don't want to put him on ignore.

But in Hellfire, he transforms into a raving hatemonger. It drags down everything in there, and it turns things unpleasant. I'd rather it just get purged with fire from that section, and be done with it, with the additional caveat that he gets slapped with the modbat if he ever posts something remotely political in any other forum.

How can you ignore something that poisons every thread in a sub forum with its hate?

I do agree with others though that his BS usually does not follow him out of hellfire. But I will tell you this... the other messageboard I frequent would have banned his IP by this point with some of the things he has said.

So, either everyone else on the board has to change, or one person does.

Which solution is more reasonable? Either we all have to control ourselves/ignore his hate, or we remove him from the subforum.

Seems like the option that requires the least change for the most people is the preferable one, no?

The argument about the kid on the playground now boils down to the kid's parents getting upset at the other kids responding instead of NOT TAKING him to the playground and letting him scream at them. If you know your child is going to scream all the way through a presentation/movie, you don't take him/her. Taking them and telling everyone else to ignore it is neither polite nor practical.

No one is actually saying he contributes, so why not remove him from the forum?

As I said, actual moderation is the best solution. If the people in question couldn't clean up their posting habits, they'd quickly find they no longer have a posting habit. However, I get just as disgusted by the replies he gets as I am by his original post. And it's not like the forum was a bastion of civility and reasonableness without him there, either.

Take a little responsibility, people. Everyone likes blaming the other guy for what gets said. "He started it!" didn't work when you were a kid, and it doesn't work now. You, and only you, are completely responsible for your own posts. One person flaming doesn't absolve your scathing rebuttal in the slightest. There's a time when flaming someone is completely warranted--just like there's a time when beating someone's face is completely warranted. It should still be against the rules, and warranted or not, you're still guilty of violating them. Of course, of late, there have been no rules, so there is no reason not to flame at will. Actual moderation would change that quickly.

When he was banned from Hellfire in 3.0, things were hugely more civil- there were still flareups, but not in every single freakin' thread!

I used to get up early in the mornings when I was a little girl so that I could watch my dad shave. He had a brush, a cup, shaving soap, and a straight razor. Sometimes he'd let me soap up my face. That stuff was soooo creamy!

With his unprovoked attack on a new poster who provided a reasoned, lengthy response to a question asked, I now must add my request to have Montegue removed from Hellfire. Anyone who calls someone a liar because their answer doesn't fit their own preconceived notion of how the world works needs to go.

The dearth of new posters (not to mention an obviously well-spoken one) combined with common decency should make the only rational response to this unprovoked attack a removal of the offender.

I say keep him around. The newcomers who post probably have lurked long enough to know what to expect, and those invited by other Glader's should be briefed on what to expect.

It's like inviting Dwight Schrute to a party; you do it so people can witness the spectacle.

Seriously, how many people have left the glade because of Monte? I know I've taken some seriously long breaks after reading his posts, and considered not coming back at all.

Heck I wonder how many potential contributors have read hellfire as guests and never even bothered to register.

To the person that noted that Hellfire (PBWotI) was civil just before the Glade 3.0 crashed, that is only partially accurate. It was actually civil while Monte was on his self imposed hiatus. I and a few others actually started participating in the civil conversations again.

When he came back he made up for it in spades.

Pfft! We don't need mods. Don't respond to the jerks. That makes them crazy. It's fun to watch them go all apoplectic with nothing to reply to. Besides, a lack of bias at this stage in the game would be nigh impossible. And just silly. Dingoes, strategically deployed, on the other hand... =P

Moderation is acceptable if moderation is unbiased. If the mods can be unbiased, I am *more* than happy to abide by rules. Where are the rules, and what are the parameters? Or are the rules a secret?
