Mandelbrot fractals as 3d images

I thought I'd share some really beautiful images created from the mandelbrot fractals.

Really beautiful for the artist in me, and totally cool for the math geek in me. :)

And through a fractal on a breaking wall I see you my friend, and touch your face again.

The first one looks like a clumped up sweater :)

Neat, SG. Coulton continues to be cool, apparently.

Although, I have to admit, that nothing mesmerizes me with self-similarity quite like the Sierpinski Triangle.

Man, the Sierpinski Triangle is a thing? I independently developed that doodling in my notebook probably back in junior high! I am big on the geometric doodling. :p

As to these 3d fractals, I am half-tempted to visit the websites for these fractal communities. I'm afraid the math would hurt me, though.

I also wonder if the color is part of the math. I'm guessing no, at the moment, but the idea intrigues me.

Hummm, I see a good field to pick my next wall paper from.

The color is arbitrarily assigned to the value of the function at a given coordinate. Typically, you create a spectrum and assign each color to a value range.
