Not a west coast thing, Poland is still trying to take over the east coast and industrial mid-west. We have similar pastries but I've never seen those specific ones before.

Note the Berliner, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berliner_%28pastry%29 - not as much filling, but our variant I suppose. Not one of my favorites.

Around here, in the "big city" of Thunder Bay, something called a 'Persian' is the popular local donut. I've had them one and they were pretty cool, but I didn't see the big deal. Maybe I'm just not a pastry-kind-of-guy.

Sam, do they put plastic babies in a lot of foods where you live?

HAH. Just noticed it myself. The label on the pastry of the picture you posted references that a plastic baby is included.

Paczkis (pronounced Poonch-keys around here) are very much a tradition for Fat Tuesday, what with Chicago having the largest Polish population outside of Warsaw.

It's gotta be the real deal though. It's not just a donut with a jelly filling.

Interesting pronunciation. I would have said "pach-key", but if that "a" has a little mark under it, it could be an "o" of some sort, I think. A little rusty on my Polish right now. :D It's interesting because the Russian for donuts is "ponchiki".

They do look tasty.

Edit: Now that I look at the Wikipedia on it, "poonch" or "ponch" (long "o") is closer to the pronunciation than "pach". And the article refers to Russian "ponchiki" as well.

The plastic baby is traditional in a King Cake. The person who gets the baby is, wait for it, the king.

Never had one, or even heard of it before. Around here we get King cakes at this time of year:

To answer the question: Only king cakes have this oddity. No one warned me when I had my first piece of King Cake. I spit it into a napkin and tossed it. My in-laws started to complain about the lack before I fished it out again. :p
