My son's teacher sent home a note that said: "Taylor had to pull a stick today because he passed gas while I was helping him with math. That behavior is unexceptable and rude." (They get 3 sticks for behavior and when all 3 are pulled they have to go to the principal's office for a spanking.)

I didn't even think about it, I just crossed out the word and put the correct spelling above it and signed it. My husband said I'm being a smart-ass, and I said I wasn't trying to be....she is supposed to be teaching my child after all, right? And she didn't even make a silly spelling mistake out of carelessness, she made up a whole new word..



Should I cut the bottom of the note off or leave it as it is and let him turn it in tomorrow??

I say leave it be, that is send it the way you have it. A teacher should have more care than that. Plus it seems like a silly thing to get in trouble for, passing gas is hardly a big offense and sometimes you just can't hold it. Now if he did it every time the teacher was there maybe but come on.

I don't know. I don't really believe that mispelled words are all that bad. They make you stand out and seem cooler, since almost everyone else lives in a world where everything must be spelled perfectly for no good reason. Fine example of sheep mentality.

As to your note I would just leave it.

I'd send back the correction in red pencil, with a grade on top, but then I do that to my mom. Also... in trouble for farting? Seriously? It's not a thing one has full control of. He just needs to learn to let it out slow and quiet. Anyway, the way I grew up flatulence is politely unmentionable... everyone pretends it never happens and the only possible rudeness is in drawing attention to it.

I'd add that disciplining students for passing gass is unacceptable, and that the next time she sends home a note it had damn well better be spelled properly.

With a kindergartener myself, I have to say that although we here might find it amusing that the young one let rip in company, they do need to know when that kind of thing is inappropriate. Classrooms, dinner tables - not the place for flatulence.

Now, I have no problem correcting the teacher's spelling, as crappy as my typing is. If teachers are going to get on our children, they should at least do it right. Maybe that's my own defiance for my son's teachers that's coming out.

Absolutely. He/she works for me. I don't know about the whole passing of the gas. Since he didn't get in any real trouble I'd make this a teachable moment about manners, tact, and holding it and move on after correcting the note.

While I agree... to an extent.... your child's teacher has the potential to make life difficult for your child. Petty or not, it is within the realm of possibility.

(I got a bit pissed off when my daughter's teacher marked her wrong for marking 7/0 as "undefined" instead of 0. ) That didn't go so hot either.

Heh, CoD gamers would be pretty pissed if their K/D ratio was 0 when they got 7 kills and 0 deaths.

You gotta be kidding me....Kate send the note back as you signed it! That teacher needs to go back to school to learn the difference between except and accept! Really, though...passing gas is an offense deserving of disciplinary action, via three strikes?? Come on!! Where the hell are these "educators" coming from any more??

Send it as is, and chuckle to yourself knowing that in addition to the atrocity that is her use of accept/except, saying something like "Taylor had to..." when the writer was the one who forced him to do so would be frowned upon in any reputable school's 200 level writing class.
I don't think of myself as anywhere near qualified to instruct in the world of actual writing, but I'd not use a sentence that is what I would consider a fragment: "That behavior is unacceptable and rude.", in any correspondence in which I wanted to be taken seriously.

As DE said, if you expect me to respect you, at east show enough respect for me to make sure your correspondence isn't a train wreck.

I'm sure Khross could tell us where both I and the teacher are wrong here, but the master hasn't spoken.

I sent the note, as is. I hope Taylor doesn't have a bad day because of it. The teacher already doesn't like him because he asks her questions instead of blindly doing what he is told and saying "yes ma'am" which, down here in the South is considered "disrespectful."
For the record, here is the passing gas story as my son told me:

"Mom I forgot where I was today, and forgot that I couldn't fart in school and I farted next to the teacher's desk while she was helping me with my work and I got a stick pulled."
I asked him if it was loud and he said no, I asked him if it stunk and he said no, and I asked why he got in trouble for it then? He replied that he had made a silly face while trying to work the gas out and when she asked what he was doing he told her, hahahaha!

I send my son to private school to avoid a lot of the crap that's wrong with our public school system, but now I have to deal with a whole other set of issues....I really need to work with my son on some of these things. I'm a very laid back mom and very playful and have allowed him to get away with way too many things at home, especially when I was homeschooling him, that cause him to get in trouble at school.

Send it back with your correction and see how your son does in her class. Nothing puts a kid on the top of someone's shit-list like calling their teacher out on what they will dismiss as an honest error.

Just about everybody else:

Obviously you all have such a wonderful knowledge of what it takes to run a classroom. Let the kids do what they want, fart, burp, spit....whatever. These are all natural bodily functions...So what.

Does anyone that commented to that effect have the first bit of experience of what it takes to run a classroom and keep the children in that classroom in line. Discipline policies are set because if you give just a little bit, there is no control whatsoever. If a school can't keep the peace and keep the children from running roughshod over the teachers and administration by letting them get away with whatever they want, there will be no learning at all.

The opinions here really sicken me. Most of you have no idea of what you are talking about and just keep spouting your anti-public school BS. Just proves to me that teachers are really looked down upon for what they do because they DARE to try and control a classroom of 20+ children so they don't have absolute anarchy on their hands on a daily basis.
