New Twin Towers Unveiled as World’s Jaw Hits Floor
"AAAAAGH! YOU HAVE ERECTED A TERRIFYING MONUMENT TO THE NIGHTMARES OF 9/11!!!" was probably not the reaction that Seoul-based Yongsan Dream Hub corporation had in mind when they unveiled their plans today for an ambitious new construction project: Two high-rises connected by a "pixelated cloud" structure that, tragically, calls to mind the kinds of images you don't really want to call to mind when looking at a new set of twin towers. The design is by Dutch architectural firm MVRDV, who seemingly had no ill will when they envisioned the cloud as a kind of oasis in the sky, with "a large connecting atrium, a wellness centre, conference centre, fitness studio, various pools, restaurants and cafes." (Rendering here.) Actually, now that I've sat with it for a little while, a floating sauna inside a pixelated cloud sounds pretty relaxing — the kind of place Mario and Luigi might go to unwind after a hard day...

Nope, nope, still looks like 9/11.

It looks rather dumb, but the WTC wasn't what initially came to mind when I saw it.

Culturally, 9/11 is irrelevant to other countries. That doesn't change the fact that it looks like the freaking towers are exploding. :P

On the contrary, if Korea had had a couple of large skyscrapers destroyed by North Korea and we were building a new pair that looked like that one, we'd quickly discover we are the center of the universe. You're basically half right. We're not the center of the universe if something is offensive to us, we are if it's offensive to someone else.

That said, it's clearly not an intentional allusion to 9/11 and the resemblance isn't that strong... but it's there. It looks stupid to boot.

There's plenty of reason to hate the design of the towers, and none of them have anything to do with 9/11,

I didn't think of 9/11 at first, my thought was a structure built in that manner looks like it is not structural sound. I mean given where it is placed I hope that the understories are built with enough reinforcement to hold something like that. Not that I know anything about architecture and engineering but I think I would be afraid of those buildings.

Well, it's presented to you right next to a picture of the 9/11 disaster.

So you can't really say if you would've thought "9/11" if it weren't right next to it.

I thought it was a lego model of 9-11.

Not to be obnoxious, but I'm not quite sure how you can not see the towers there and live in this country. I dont think it was intentional, but uh, yeah.

Now I'm sure if I designed a building that looked like BoXer losing a Starcraft match to an American, it would get a similar reaction in Korea.

ALOL.

To be fair, it's the Dutch who designed this thing.

This. My first thought was that it would be cool to live in one of the jutting out apartments. My second was that it would suck to live in one of the apartments directly under the ones that jut out.

/edit my third is that doesn't look like the WTC exploding and my fourth is LOL that Asian woman they photoshopped in is looking at the sky away from the tower.

I'm with Dash. I find it shocking that anyone wouldn't think of 9/11; in particular, the moment when the second plane hit:

First thing I thought of when I saw the pic of that building design, before I saw any text referencing 9/11.

Any pair of skyscrapers is going to resemble the Twin Towers because there's two skyscrapers right next to one another. Does that mean it looks like 9/11? No, it just means there's two skyscrapers right next to one another.

They're connected together by something that looks like an explosion. Does that mean it looks like 9/11? Take a look at the 9/11 picture again. That explosion isn't connecting the towers. It's just one tower blowing up.

Really, all you've got is "two skyscrapers" and "looks like an explosion." For some people, I'm sure that's enough. I see what you're seeing. I understand how you got from point A to point B, but no they really don't look the same. One looks like a plane crash, and the other looks like a pair of buildings vomiting up a Super Mario level.

Clearly, they do not look exactly the same. Stylisticly, there is a definite resemblance.

I cropped out everything but the skyscrapers, and I asked a couple of random people in my office for their first impression. They both mentioned 9/11. It was a small sample size, though.

I'm not saying there aren't similarities, I'm saying they don't look the same. It's sort of like how my brother and I share similarities, but we don't look the same. People look at us and recognize that we're blood relatives. Nobody would mistake one of us for the other, unless my brother was shot in a brutal car-jacking and my mother went mad with grief.

That's what's going on here. There are two skyscrapers next to one another. That alone calls to mind the Twin Towers. It's sort of like how any clock tower looks like Big Ben, and any tower with a monkey looks like the Empire State Building. That's all the further this resemblance goes. That thing between the towers looks like silly video game **** rather than an explosion. I see the same similarities that you guys are seeing, but that's only because I was watching the news the morning those planes hit the Twin Towers.

To take this a step further, let's address the assertion that everyone must see 9/11 in this skyscraper design, and it's incomprehensible that anyone else would not. This is indicative of a culture who has taken, "Never forget!" to an unhealthy level.

We recently passed the 60th anniversary of another day of infamy that will live in the hearts of American citizens forever, but I never once heard my grandfather comment that the sight of a wrecked ship conjured painful memories of Pearl Harbor. Instead we have the USS Missouri parked in Pearl Harbor with its cannons pointing out over the wreckage of the USS Arizona. What have we done with the rubble of the World Trade Center besides cry about it for ten years?

I've not seen that assertion made.
