Is that one decent?

I have the Merkur "Classic 1904" and the Gilette Superspeed (circa 1969)

I'd say you haven't found a good shaving cream or soap, then, Vlad. I hate shaving cream from a can with a passion. Shaving cream from a tube with a brush is far better, but for me, the best is a tallow based soap with a brush, followed with a good aftershave balm.

Bar soap, Aethien? If it works for you, that's great, but I think specialized shaving soaps are far superior. YMMV, of course...

Electric shavers? Have tried them, lots of them, vastly prefer blade and brush.

Oh, I'm sure you're right, and the specialized soaps are better. I just don't put that much effort into my personal grooming, and once I realized that Barbasol was just glorified soap, I figured, why waste the money?

So close. I use the satin finish model. Love it, but it's kinda deadly. The entire handle turns when you're adjusting the beard depth, so it's really tricky to hold the head in place without gripping it by the ends of the "T" shape, which is what I was doing when it slipped out of my grasp and sliced open my fingertip.

I've considered replacing it with Bill Adama's razor, the Merkur Vision, but I fear I'd miss the adjustability feature too much.

I've had mine for a couple of years and love it. Shel is right though.. just have to be a bit careful when replacing blades or adjusting the head. DO NOT DO THIS WHEN YOUR HANDS ARE WET.

There will be blood

So what's the deal with these safety razors? I've never known anybody that uses one.

You must have missed the big shaving discussion that Foamy triggered a couple of years ago.
Check out some of this guy's videos, in particular:

And the article that kicked off the discussion: Learn How to Shave Like Your Grandpa.

I initially used the old fashion bar that you suds up yourself, but now I just shave in the shower and don't bother to use anything. When the water is hot your pores open up and you can shave without cutting yourself or ripping the hair out of your face.

The traditional replacement/disposable razors are hell on my skin and the blades seem to become dull after only a few shaves. The safety razor uses an actual razor blade and (in my experience) stays sharper longer. Overall I get a better shave from it.

When I use 3/4/5 blade razors I get razor burn a lot. When I use the single blade Merkur, no worries. It used to take me a while because I was being cautious, but I can shave just as fast with it as anything else now.

The Vision is adjustable, Shel. But instead of numbers, it adjusts to V, I, S, I, O, and N. It's a very good razor, but you have to fidget with it and it needs to be taken apart for cleaning regularly. I wanted one too, but it's just too high maintenance for me once I looked into It.

This is why I switched too Lenas.

Using one of those multi bladed doo hickeys left my throat looking like freshly ground hamburger.

I still tend to take my time though. I actually enjoy using a good shaving cream, a nice fresh razor blade and taking my time shaving. It relaxes me

Thanks, I'll take both of those facts into consideration if I find myself seriously considering such a purchase. For now, I'm ok with the Futur.

And on that note... I was able to find a picture of Hopwin right after he shaves...
