My sister pointed this out to me:

It's uncanny.

Didn't Bill the Cat go through a stage where he had his hair/fur in little mini-pigtails or something, too?

If you people would just ignore Miley, she'd go away. She's an attractive twentyish year old girl making questionable decisions. The only thing that makes her different from your sister/cousin/daughter is that someone gave her attention and money.

That, and the fact that my sister, cousin, and daughter all have made far less questionable decisions.

He can probably say with some level of confidence that they've never fingered themselves on stage in front of millions of viewers.

Is that philosophically worse than doing it for an audience of ten?

The audience of ten is probably more profitable per head.

But you're less likely to move band merchandise with an audience of ten.

The results speak for themselves. Also, if you're thinking the average girl has fingered herself in front of 10 people just based on your own cynicism...

From one perspective, it's a sad perversion of a previously wholesome Disney pop star. From another perspective, we are all people, half of which probably didn't know anything about Miley Cyrus a couple weeks ago, and now we're having a thread discussion on her. Whichever marketing exec/record industry exec came up with this ploy is getting very, very rich, and considering who Miley's father is, their family/Miley probably isn't doing that bad herself. Sensationalism to revitalize a career is not new, and in this case, it worked brilliantly.

I've been aware of Miley since her HM days. She is doing the classic rebellion against having to be the wholesome good girl that a lot of child stars have done. One of the things to remember is that the bad girls get a lot more attention and make a truckload of money quickly. Good girls work a lot harder and get paid a lot less, as a general rule.

Sinead O'Connor tried to warn her about the quick burn out of the public on troubled bad girls, but Miley isn't listening. I wonder how much of the wild child is marketing the product and how much of it is an actual problem.

Good luck to her in keeping the level plumb. The act can become the reality all too easily.

The simple fact of the matter is that she can't do the Disney shtick forever. She has to shed that image to sell to a market of adults. Her Disney persona was huge, so her break from it has to be of similar scope.

On a more general note, running around letting the whole world know you're legal is something boys and girls alike do at that age. They do stupid **** they've always wanted to do, but that there parents wouldn't allow, precisely because their parents can't stop them. Most of us never pole-danced on MTV, but most of us didn't have a nation full of soccer moms expecting us to be Hannah Montana for the rest of our lives, either.

People do that to varying degrees. Not every kid goes through a major "I'm an adult, look at what I can do without parental supervision" stage. We're all individuals, and it is not something everyone, or even most people, go through to a really strong degree.

That said, she does have to break with Disney and Hannah Montana if she wants to be an adult star. So far, she's avoided having anything other than a bad girl image, though. Lindsey Lohan style self destruction hasn't been an issue.

She just has a larger audience for which to display her questionable decisions. Otherwise I don't care. I get why some parents are cheesed off. Personally I would hope I would see it as the Teachable Moment it is.
