As I write this I am at a Girl Scout camp out, kind of. The event is for younger girls, a very diverse troop in age, ethnicity, and several other factors. They are all having a blast. Right now they are enjoying hot dogs and cocoa, learning a new song from one of the troop leaders and giggling a lot.

We are on the back yard of one of the troop leaders. The girls are in an arch around a raised campfire from another troop leaders medieval camp equipment. The home is in Norh Highlands, a suburb/small town in Sacramento, at least as we figure things.

The girls will all go home in a few hours. Most of them have one parent hanging out in the house shooting the breeze. The parents are all young enough to make me feel old. I have no girl in the troop, but am a friend of some of the troop leaders. I am not really sure why I was invited, but the kids are cute and having a great time.

Just feels a little strange to have a "camp out" for just an evening in the city.

Not wrong, just different.

Hah, that's funny - my daughter's troop did a campout last night. They donned backpacking gear as if they were doing a real hike, and walked a couple of miles from the troop leader's house to another parent's place. They pitched tents in the yard and slept out overnight. They are cadettes (6th and 7th graders), getting ready for a one- or two-night backpacking trip next spring, I think.

There's actually an "urban campground" in Dayton for the Girl Scouts. It's basically a moderately sizeable wooded lot (probably at one point a part of the park that's across the road) with, I gather, a building inside that houses some educational stuff about environmentalism, if what I'm gleaning from the web is accurate.

I drive by it on my way to roller derby bouts.

Dayton has a (at least what used to be haven't been there in years) rather decent KOA as well. I was thinking about renting a cabin there for one of my weekend vacations, but then the opportunity to go Chicago came up instead.
