He seemed fairly savvy about the floods. Bit ballsy, but I wouldn't say dumb.

He was running from a debris flow, while filming. That's asking to trip up, and fall on your ***. That would not have ended well for him.

Further, standing on a channel bank in a flood like that isn't real smart, but I'll give him a pass, as I couldn't see the layout.

Arathain:

That kind of thing falls in your area of expertise, but have you watched the video more than once? I only ask because that looked like a frequently flooded channel system/river bed to me the second time through. Although, I do agree that running and filming isn't exactly bright.

Arathain, you know that being able to film steady while walking/running backwards and dodging objects is one of the most important skills in a cameraman's arsenal, right? He obviously has experience with these types of things (flash floods are on his website). I wouldn't call him dumb, more like specialized.

Only once. But pretty much any channel is "frequently flooded" or there wouldn't be a channel. More specifically, blue-sky flash floods are very common in arid areas of the US (large catchments, heavy, sporadic events), so yes it's nothing unheard of.

That said, no two flood events act the same. He may be a camera ninja, but nobody with river experience would put themselves in that situation. Hell, look at the video at 3:20. Check out the left bank. They have no exit without running backward a bit.

F that.

Doesn't change the fact that running backwards is likely to result in a fall, and that the end result would have been bad indeed.

Yeah but Arathain saying the guy shouldn't do it because something bad can happen is like telling a paratrooper not to jump out of a plane.

He's saying that the guy shouldn't have done it in this particular situation, not that he should never do it. There are situations where paratroopers should not jump, as well, no matter how much jumping out of airplanes might be what they do. That's why suitable drop zones not right on top of enemy troops are selected.

LOL, jumping out of a plane into a conflict is not a good idea either. The difference is, it's necessary.

Anyway, any journalistic point he wanted to make could have been made from the bank. This was a stunt. If you want to get a rush outrunning a flood, fine, but give someone else the camera.
