When referring to an item that is damaged/inoperable, do you say it's "broken" or "busted"?

Broken, busted has another meaning altogether.

I probably use Broken, but Busted might happen too, depending on context, who I'm talking to, etc...

I personally typically say broken. However, busted also works depending on audience.

Either, but with a heavy preference towards Broken.

I'm terrible at these sorts of dialect-driven questions, because I spent my formative years in a linguistic melting pot whereby I recognize and accept as valid multiple options.

When I worked at an Online company located here in America back in 1996, I heard another tech describe a customer's inoperable computer as "hosed." That was the first time I ever heard that word used in that way. I immediately fell in love with it and have used it very much often since.

Edit: The tech using the term hosed was directed towards me, not the customer. Though, many other awesome things were exchanged between techs and customers at that time. One of my favorites was, and here I am very much going off on a tangent...

Spoiler:
At a time when the internet was still very new to people in 1996/97:

Man, probably in his early twenties after I resolved his issue: "So, what else is good about this software by this Online company here in America?"

Me: "Well, everything is regulated so you know you're safe. All files are scanned for viruses, all areas (save for some unmoderated chat rooms) are safe to explore. You won't find porn on it, unlike the internet itself."

Man in real, unfeigned, earnest surprise: "There's porn?!"

Me: "Yes, when you enter the internet itself it exists out there but not inside..."

Man: "Wha.... How do I get to the porn?!"

Me: "If you click on blah and go to blah it will take you to the regular internet and you can find there if you choose to."

Man: "Click what now?! Where is this again?! (Most people only had one phone line) What do I do?!?!"

Me: "Once you go here and here you can go and search for it."

Man: "Ok. But what do I do to search?! Where is it?!"

Me: "Just go to Alta Vista (who remembers that?) and do a search. I am sure you will find it. That's about as much as I can help you."

Man desperate: "But what do I need to do...."

Busted flat in Baton Rogue, waiting on a train.

Busted has many meanings, sans money is a major segment of the definition.

If a radio looks fine but doesn't work, it's broken.
If the radio is laying on the floor in pieces, it's busted.

There are probably a lot more "rules" in my brain, and most of them probably make even less sense than this, but this is the only one of which I'm actually consciously aware.

So, "busted" is what happens to the radio when you turn it on and find out it's "broken", then throw it against the wall in frustration?

That's one totally valid possibility :)

To me:
Busted - damaged by external source
Broken - damaged by either external source or just fell apart.

I don't use busted at all. Broken, sure. Hosed, horqued, trashed etc.

Most of the time, its either broken or its ****.

Isn't "horked" what happens if you're attacked by a horker?
