Let's say I ordered something online and the shipping option I chose is 5-7 business days through fedex. So, I get confirmation that the package has been shipped today and is in Phoenix(350ish miles away) meaning it could theoretically be here in 2 days(one day for it to get to the distribution center near here and the next for it to actually get to the house). Will it just sit in the warehouse for several days so it will hit the 5-7 business days option I paid for, or could it get here early? I honestly don't order much stuff online, so I have no real experience with it all.

I have so little experience here that I didn't notice the estimated delivery date is for tomorrow, so apparently it isn't going to sit in the warehouse and I'll likely have my new computer tomorrow. Totally sweet.

Uh, congrats...

I don't mean to be critical, but I kind of have to ask: did you pick "new computer" over "stopping ear bleeding and preventing hearing loss?"

Because my ear problems cleared up. Plus, I didn't purchase the computer. It was a gift.

Shipping speeds can be scarily awesome, regardless of what shipping option you choose. I had an order from newegg not terribly long ago... I don't remember the details at the moment, but one of the items in the order could be reasonably measured in hours from the time of order confirmation to arrival. One and a half days or something? For the basic ol cheap shipping option, it was pretty insane.

Granted, the other item in my order took a few more days after that, but still! :p

Hooray for new computer though all the same. Always a very good time.

I ordered 3rd class US Mail recently...I expected the package in 2 weeks. Got it in 3 or 4 days. I was shocked.

I used to work for UPS, so the product descriptions are from their offerings.

It doesn't mean that the shipping company will slow down your package to meet the lesser service agreement.

If you pay for 2nd day delivery, that is what you get. You can be assured that your package will be shipped and received within that time frame because there is a particular process in place to ensure they meet that agreement.

If you pay for basic shipping (ground), then there is no guarantee of shipping time. The package will make it and it may very well make it in less time because of shipping distance. But if your (ground) package doesn't make it through the sort and onto an outbound trailer right away, they won't make any further effort because there is no service agreement on that package. Next day, 2nd day and 3-day select have a specific service agreement and it is made sure of that it is met, otherwise you aren't getting the service that you (or the shipper) paid for.

Sometimes it gets there quicker, but it's only because of luck and certain circumstances surrounding the shipping distance and when the package may arrive at the sorting facility, or gets loaded onto a truck.

The quicker shipping gives you the peace of mind to know exactly when your package should be arriving and can take this right back to UPS should it not meet the agreement. With Ground service, you just don't know and you have to wait it out.

Also, a lot of places have warehouses scattered all over the country now. I used to order stuff from CDW in Chicago a long time ago, then a few months back ordered something again. I had it the next day. Turns out they have a distribution center nearby in Southern California.

Fedex uses the spokes and hubs model, it's entirely possible for a package dropped off at your closest point and addressed to you could be routed through the hub in Denver. Still, they've almost always delivered ahead of time for me.
