An alien/angel/Hari Seldon/whatever appears before you on February 1st and notifies you that in exactly one year's time, the zombie apocalypse will break out. He does not say where it will begin, but says it is unavoidable. It will go global in 72 hours, and will wipe out the entire population within 90 days. Everyone that you do not save will die. You are tasked with saving the human race. He hands you a typed list of 200 names of people whom you do not know, that should be saved to assist in the rebuilding of humanity. All are located throughout North America. You can save as many people as you want, but must save these 200.

Zombies will be of the Walking Dead variety, though they will not rot. He states very clearly that while there will be no survivors after 90 days, the zombies you do not kill will remain indefinitely.

You have half a million dollars in savings, and a one-year head start. You are 100% convinced that you were told the truth, but have no evidence of this encounter, other than your list typed on plain white paper.

What's your plan?

Get an MRI and possibly start some meds.

People who genuinely believe that:
*They were contacted by a supernatural being
*They know future outcomes
*They alone know the true interpretation of said supernatural being's words
*The human race will perish unless they follow what was proscribed

Generally are quite ill. The worst ones start religions.

1) Identify where all nuclear power plants are. Pick a location as far away from them as possible (they will go crit without human intervention, why does everyone ignore this??)

Sigh. It's these types of inevitable responses that motivated the statement:

You are 100% convinced that you were told the truth

Please try again.

Yeah, I thought about that. Additionally, I'd want the permanent settlement to be located near a modest sized river with a reasonably small, controllable watershed. No mines, no chemical warehouses, power plants, etc. upstream.

Isolated area, obviously. I was thinking one of those resort ranches out west, Colorado or something, that has the rustic hotel. I'd be looking for 200+ rooms in an isolated area, source of water, etc that can be livable w/o electricity.

2) Contact the 200 people and attempt to recruit as many as possible

I was wondering about location. If you can get enough of the 200 people on board you can pool their $$$ into your resource tank which would help determine locations. I'd prefer to locate somewhere with long-growing seasons so that starvation becomes less of an issue. I was thinking somewhere along the south-eastern seaboard/gulf region. Don't want to end up with all 200 of us getting all Donner-party on the rest.

Disease is an issue in the south, refrigeration becomes more difficult. I'm thinking long term it would be better further north. Short term you can raid enough food from stores, etc. to live well.

Also, I don't care how charismatic you are, but if you came to me and said there's a zombie apocalypse imminent and I should give you some cash, I don't think that would end well.

I'd develop a hunker-down option for each of the 200, and tell them where to go when the **** hits the fan. Hopefully less than 200 individual locations, and I'd retrieve them somehow post 90 days.

Mostly, that first 90 days would be unpredictable due to remaining survivors. Zombies are predictable.

^ Interesting perspective. Disease is definitely a bigger issue in warmer climates.

If you can't convince the 200 people to come with you upfront, what do you think your success rate would be to get them to set up enough supplies/etc to hunk down for 90 days? If someone came and told me zombie-apocalypse and told me to come with them, I'd say no. If they told me to shelter in place, I'd laugh at them like one of those homeless people with the end-is-nigh signs.

With that in mind, I would warn them the end times were coming and then map out a course to get to as many of them post-event as quickly/efficiently as possible. Then I'd take my 500,000 and buy a bus and up-armor it with some sort of crazy plow to push the various abandoned cars off the roads. I'd then come door-to-door to pick up the survivors and get them to the base as soon as possible.

Humanity had a good run. I'm gonna take my half a million, find a completely uncharted island and stock that ***** up with supplies so I can retire the way I've always wanted to.

And people get shitty over Superman saying "Krypton had its chance" in Man of Steel.

1. I would buy a hunting lodge/hotel and begin to work on that.

2. Find someone with more money than I have access to and make them person 201. Because a half mill isn't enough to do what needs to be done in one years time.

3. Spend a good four months just working on the list, making them believe. Anyone that isn't 'on board' after that, ****'em.

4. Recruit folks that I trust and add them to the list.

5. Start stocking up on weapons and hope the ATF doesn't come around.

6. Fuel and power. Solar, wind turbines, anything to keep the lights on. Take human comforts away and people get shitty with each other, we need to avoid explosions within Wayne Mannor. Because yea, that's right, I'm the God Damned Batman.

7. Stock pile books because some things should not be lost to the decay of the world. If art is lost, why bother.

8. Water and ways to keep it clean of contamination. No one wants to die of Dysentary.

9. A green house will need to be built for winter growing.

10. Try to invite Joss Whedon and his clan to come along because, someone that has made me as happy as him over the years, should be given a shot at making it. See #7.

Pretty sure Joss would be on the list of 200, no? If not... it's a bad list...

You're not going to get anything worthwhile with the funds you have. But, once the people clear out, all that's left is mopping up zombies out of your choice location. So I'd scout and find the best spot, but not try to buy it.

I think the best option here is to just set up a few "bunkers", and just try to convince the 200 to just go to the nearest one (hopefully very local) on that day. Look, what if I'm right? Have enough supplies that they can hunker down there for a bit, while you come get them. Obviously, have a TV there where they can watch the carnage unfold.

Yeah, I'd keep this to a minimum. If ATF takes your weapons or throws you in jail, it's over. I think the safest option is to collect the remaining weapons on day 91, as best you can.

I'm not sure this would be lost. Some would, sure, but you can wade through the carnage afterward and get much of this.

Someone suggested trying to get all 200 on a cruise ship. That is possibly a way to get everyone together for zero hour. But, now you're confined and vulnerable to massacre following an infection on board somewhere.

I'd say fuel would be a major problem. Once you run out of gas you are literally drifting in the ocean at the mercy of the not-so-merciful-Poseidon.

First get a safe camp, place, whatever set up, totally equipped with whatever you think is needed. Then send a certified letter to each of the 200 telling them they have won a free luxury vacation to get them to the compound. Then lock the doors and have a meeting!

You and I think alike. I would do something similar, possibly offering them an all expense paid trip to receive a check or something or other. Have the award ceremony on the day before it begins. Hire Mercs to kidnap the stragglers.

If I won something unsolicited, there's no way I would go.

Mercs is not a bad idea.

I don't think half a million dollars would go very far in this scenario. That's only $2,500 per person needing saving.

My initial reaction to this is that it's a lot like a WoW quest. "Here's this money and list of names; despite the fact that I am a benevolent supernatural being I can think of no course of action other than to dump this problem in your lap, mortal, then disappear while you try to solve it for me."

My reaction, since I don't need to accumulate experience points or cool gear from this quest, is to tell him to keep his money and solve the **** problem himself.

I'd take the money and make sure that me and mine were safe when the flag went up. The rest of humanity? **** em.

Half a million is the big problem here. It's not enough to stockpile resources, or prepare fortifications, etc.

Ideally I'd want a large sailboat/tall ship. I'd find an uninhabited island and start stocking it with everything we'll need/weapons, then start moving the 200 there in advance, in addition to everyone else we're going to need.

I'm thinking most fruit-loops are 100% convinced they know "the truth".

A $half million to be the savior of mankind seems kinda cheap, and not a good start at all to having enough to quickly accumulate what's needed for 200 people for an indefinite period of time. You couldn't even hire those 200 folks for a year, if indeed they were as valuable as it's claimed they are.

Party with the cash, buy a bullet. Go all 'HEADON' when it's apparent the end is nigh.
