I don't see a forum for Crafting so maybe just a thread then, eh? What are you crafting right now? Pics, descriptions, etc. Yeah, gardening and fixing up cars count....anything you're creating/fixing with your hands.

The model railroad is on hold until after we move, at which point it will be totally rebuilt.

I have a PRS 245se on my workbench. It's being rebuilt from scratch with all new electronics, tuners, and possibly new frets if I'm feelin' frisky.

Painting planes and putting together new flight bases for Advance the Colors. In the WH40K dept. I also have to finish the Valkyrie and have another Tank completely untouched in a box.

I've just finished 1) rebuilding the vacuum dust catch on my radial arm saw and 2) stripping and repainting the front door sidelight panels.

I'm in the beginning stage of 1) building a new office work desk/area and 2) re-sawing the lumber for what will be 4 walnut end tables for our living room.

I'm in the middle of the 3rd rewrite of one of my major perl scripts to organize the 10's of thousands of LUNs I manage at work to identify their hardware config, attached hosts, SRDF replication consistency group/replication configuration/design.

I fixed a friend's bike today. One wheel was bent all out of true -- there's nothing quite so zen as patient work with a spoke wrench.

I wasn't quite satisfied with the cantilever brakes when I was done -- one side was sticking so the pads didn't pull off quite evenly, but I had limited time and didn't want to disassemble them to get the right joint oiled up properly, and it was still a drastic improvement.

Yeah, trueing wheels is fun.

I guess I craft, in terms of gardening. Pulled off the first zucchini this afternoon. And, I'll be crafting my backyard - it's time for hillside brush clearance, and I can't afford to pay anyone to do it. Hellish job.

Ah, I know! My house is crafting. Doing all the stuff around the house that needs doing. I rebuilt a stair and replaced the floor to a treehouse. I'll get a picture of the stairs, they were fun.

Just bought a new house, so... everything.

  • Removed curtains and old wooden valences from bedrooms. (Seriously, those things were like 100lb each, and secured with tapcons)
  • Pulled carpet/padding in upstairs bedroom, leveled floorboards, laid down laminate + quarter round + thresholds.
  • Pulled carpet/padding in downstairs bedrooms, got new carpet.
  • Painted all ceilings, walls, doors, and trim except entry/loft and the great room.
  • Pulled old broken over-the-stove microwave, mounted new one to studs.
  • Removed old lighting fixtures. Wired/installed new lighting fixtures and dimmer switch.
  • Removed master bathroom door.
  • Cleaned old drains and traps.
  • Caulked all windows.
  • Replaced misc. components in master, guest, and cabana bathrooms. (toilet guts, shower arm, toilet paper holder, towel racks, etc).
  • Installed wall-mounted bathroom cabinet in master bath. Built floor-mounted bathroom cabinet and installed that in the cabana bath.
  • Cut/installed cat door, which the cats have so far refused to use.
  • Fixed broken closet doors.
  • Replaced and installed new shelving in several rooms.
  • Replaced gaskets/parts on pool pump equipment.
  • Installed kayak rack on fence.

Still on the list:
  • Replace bathroom faucets.
  • Replace shower guts.
  • Snake toilets.
  • Replace master vanity lighting fixtures.
  • Remove cracked corian kitchen sink. Install stainless.
  • Install curtain rods in great room / 2nd guest bedroom.
  • Hang all pictures and wall hangings.
  • Install more shelving.
  • Install pegboard in garage.
  • Replace all sliding door weather stripping.
  • Paint remaining rooms.
  • Paint exterior.
  • Level gate brickwork so gate actually opens.
  • Select new location for garden. Dig. Till. Put down manure. Plant.

Don't have much for pics. The master bedroom used to be yellow with dingy old carpeting. Also included one of the old kitchen hallway (pink walls, pink tile), and the new version once things have been painted and replaced. The tile is still pink, and it'll have to be for a while, but it's an improvement.

When I raced on the track back in the 80s, I got my first track bike frame from one of the shop owners there. It was hanging on the wall doing nothing. When I asked him about he said I could have it, but I'd have to buy my own components, and I had to build my own wheels from scratch using stock he had on hand (at no cost to me).

To his surprise I actually did a pretty good job once I got the hang of it. The wheels were both perfectly dished and straight, and the spoke tension was pretty much dead on. (it's easier on a track bike than on modern bikes because of the crazy depth of the cassettes). Riding those wheels for the first time took some courage, but once I had a few hours on them, and they were done tinking and plinking, I but them back on the mount and did a final true-up and they served me very well for three track seasons.

Lacing spokes is a near religious experience. Mistakes can be very costly.

People, I'm working as an advisor and mentor to a few people trying to get them to re-examine their lives and fix the areas they find wanting. Its turning out to be an amazing time sink.

My efforts are showing some progress, it is rewarding.

At work, we're crafting a huge Distribution Management System to monitor and control all the household power in Austin. At home, we're getting ready to move into our new house that's being built.

Trying to create adaptive modules that can be integrated into our current client sites that will give a "native" experience regardless of device and without extra effort from the user.

Developing an unholy rat's nest of a workflow.

The short version is that the workflow downloads statement data files from our back office, then uploads them to the company that processes them.

The long version is ... longer. And involves explaining how a single "For Each" activity is being used to control 4 different activity loops.

I officially started building a full-on commuter/touring bike today.

I took possession of a brand spankin' new black 62cm Surly Straggler frame, which, once it's available in a few weeks, will be equipped with the 2015 Shimano 105 groupset and the new 11 speed rear cassette combined with a compact double front crank set. I'm not 100% sure what gear sizes the 11 speed will be available in, but I'm hoping to get at least a 30, hopefully a 32 tooth, to go along with the 34 tooth front chainring. The idea is to avoid having to put a triple chainring on the front, and still be able to climb Mount Microsoft (the SR520 hill in Redmond). :)

It will also have mechanical disc brakes, with an eye towards a future upgrade to hydraulic discs when they have been out long enough to have the kinks worked out (someone else can beta test bike brakes :p).

I haven't decided on the fidgity bits yet. Stem, handlebars, wheels and hubs are still as yet unknown. I'll sit down the the guys at Greggs Cycles and figure that stuff out once the 2015 Shimano 105 stuff is actually available.

Here is a picture of the frame (not my actual frame, but mine is just like this one).

Image

After riding my new road bike in to work the last few days (32 miles round trip), and feeling great afterwards, I've decided to make a commitment to bike commuting as much as the weather allows. I averaged about 75 minutes each way on the bike commute, which is just about how long it takes to drive on the freeway on most days (due to traffic).

This bike will get me a platform that I can put fenders on, and a bag or two suitable for carrying rain gear. Who knows. Maybe if I can make some fitness and endurance improvements, I'll try to ride the STP (Seattle to Portland) one of these years.

Hopefully it will be ready to go before the weather turns wet again in the fall.

The Steps:

The Garden:

Unfortunately, I didn't get the three bunches of bananas on the trees behind the garden. But, they're there.

And it occurred to me recently that the thing I've crafted the most lately - even in EQ terms - is bread. I got on a kick last year, and in the last year and a half, have bought no more than about five loaves of bread. My kids seem to prefer the home made stuff, so that makes me happy.
