Very cool. Photos of typical soldiers' gear from various periods between 1066 and today. Photos embedded in a slideshow, unfortunately, so I don't know how to post the pics. Here's the link though:

I passed this on as essential viewing for one of my roleplaying groups. Several observations one can make from the commonalities in regards to equipment purchasing at character creation...

I thought it was interesting to note when (a) forks appear (17th c. kit) and (b) toothbrushes (19th c.).

Although it was noted, and so it indeed proved, that there was a spoon in every kit.

There's a joke known as the "combat assault spoon" where you take an MRE spoon and shove it down through the PALS straps on your gear, generally somewhere on the chest. If the spoon is facing towards you, you're full. If it's facing away, you're hungry.
