So this is a thing, show on Nat Geo. Two survivalists, dropped in the wilderness for 21 days, with no clothes or anything. They get one simple item (Knife, machete, cookpot, firestarter, etc.) You're going on the show. What do you bring? |

Show should be called Starving & Shivering for 3 Weeks. Both contestants pick two things to show up with, and then once they've met, they pick two final items out of the four they've chosen so as to not have duplicates. I would choose a machete and a fire starter. I'd smuggle in a couple of guns as well. |

I'd choose a cookpot and a firestarter. Having the ability to boil water for drinking would be my top priority. |

Would suck if everyone ended up with a duplicate. |

Is duct tape allowed? Also it should be called Rust: for real Thay aside the ability to cut things and make fire is paramount a hatchet might be better than a machete if allowed Id be less worried about something to boil water in kate. Bear Grylls always manages to find something. |

I'd choose a Tauntaun and then cut it open and live inside of it. |

Big knife and a fire starter because I am so far removed from the caveman I can't start a fire any other way. |

I'm thinking a hatchet would be best. |

After having a 4+ foot diamond back in my flower bed on the backdoor step this weekend.....they don't have enough money to drop me naked in the wilderness for 21 days. My wife thought the kittens had a locust on the corner of the porch, about 3 feet from where she was standing. I told her NO, and get inside. Had to get a 2x4 and a flashlight to find the damn thing (I could hear it just fine). Then got my little 22mag and shot the hell out of it. It had 8 buttons and was about as thick as a coke can in the middle. I don't like killing things, but rattlesnakes on my back step gotta go. |

I would bring... pants. Seriously, all you need is a knife. Starting a fire is very easy. One would expect that you would have time to learn how beforehand if you don't know already. Since it sounds like they get two items: knife and a big pot. Rope would be so incredibly nice for traps and shelter and whatnot, and would help tremendously with starting a fire, but I'd rather have a pot. If I didn't have a knife I'd be screwed. |

have you actually tried to start a fire without any tools? Before you say its 'easy' I suggest you try it. I've done it with a hotspark and a magnifying glass but both of those times were under ideal conditions and its still a ton of work. Without any tools at all, its significantly harder than it looks. Heating wood to 800 degrees (necessary for combustion in dry conditions) is no mean feat. |

Try this sometime. It's very effective. |

Yeah most bow drills ive made used my shoelaces, the wide side is better for gripping than the vines usually used for cordage in my area. That being said give me a knife and I could get a functional bow drill up and running in an area with wood. |

a) how are you going to make the bow? Most parts of the world don't have vines that would work for this. Some barks will work depending on the flora available, but both tend to be brittle and may not stand up for long enough to maintain this. There are options, of course, but it is not the easy method you're making it out to be. I'm not saying its impossible. I'm saying is difficult and time and energy consuming in an environment where you have little spare energy. Even notching the board effectively could take you an hour if all you have are rocks. |

Again, I said I need a knife or I'm screwed. None of the assembly is difficult, except for the string. I said rope would be very handy for making fire for this reason. Still, you can make a makeshift string, probably, depending on the environment (vines, tree bark, vegetation stems, thin soaked strip of wood). I've done this many times. I'm assuming they aren't dumping me in the tundra or desert, because then it would all be moot anyway. |

Tree roots work well also, though they can be kind of slippery. |

Many people have been on this show with perfect knowledge of how to create bow drills, getting fires started in their back yards or local woods no problem. It's a different story when they're out in a jungle getting rained on 20 hours a day with a useless partner and no caloric intake. |

Grow hair out long. Cut hair with knife, braid hair into cordage for bow drill. You know you will be going on the show... Jungle - **** that though. I'm take 50 gallons of DEET. |

Whenever I go out in the woods just me and a knife, I'm usually looking for decent weather. It's barely fun as it is. |

I still think the Louisiana Swamp was the most hostile place to be dropped. Followed by that place they went in the Amazon where the first dude in said "Nope", the second team failed after 4 days, and the third team were two that had already done the show once before. |
