It was hard being a dreamer as a kid but it's even harder as an adult. It's like you have to choose between being a dreamer or being an accepted, productive member of society. You can't be both. Not being true to yourself can be really depressing, but so can not fitting in and not being productive. :/

You can still be a dreamer as an adult; you just have to do it on your own time. My response to the lyrics would be "yes, dreamers DO get in the way. You can dream all you want but someone still has to do the actual work." Growing up and growing older is about realizing what dreams are realistic, and what dreams are just fantasy - but that doesn't mean you can't still have them.
