Post subject:  Define "Geek"

Was thinking about this recently, and how liberally this term was applied.

So, what exactly is your definition of a "geek?"

Is it someone that wears glasses and likes science/math?

Is it someone who likes computers/technology?

Is the term just an arbitrary, vestigal insult with no real meaning at all?

Personally, I cannot define the term, as everytime I try to, I have to stop myself and say "that's not really a geek, it's just a lifestyle choice." I don't even agree with the dictionary's definition.

I have defined geek as a nerd with social skills.

A Nerd has no social skills, but is very smart. A Geek is smart like a nerd, but they have a chance of getting laid.

Interesting, darksiege.

Does that mean I have a chance of finally retiring my Fleshlite?

From Wikipedia

This word comes from English dialect geek, geck: fool, freak; from Low German geck, from Middle Low German. The root geck still survives in Dutch gek: crazy, and in the Alsatian word Gickeleshut: geek's hat, used in carnivals.[2]

Definitions

The definition of geek has changed considerably over time, and there is no longer a definitive meaning. The terms nerd, gimp, dweeb, dork and spod have similar meanings as geek, but many choose to identify different connotations amongst these terms, although the differences are disputed. In a 2007 interview on The Colbert Report, Richard Clarke said the difference between nerds and geeks is "geeks get it done."[3] Julie Smith defined a geek as "a bright young man turned inward, poorly socialized, who felt so little kinship with his own planet that he routinely traveled to the ones invented by his favorite authors, who thought of that secret, dreamy place his computer took him to as cyberspace—somewhere exciting, a place more real than his own life, a land he could conquer, not a drab teenager's room in his parents' house."[4] "Geeks in suits clothing" is phrase which has been used for IT technical stars which also have knowledge about business needs.

-------------------

There are enough of us out there that we are no longer loners. We gather in large groups, we are a sub-economy unto ourselves, and we make the world a better place. Odds are you work for geeks at some level of hierarchy. The internet has become our tool, our communications net, and our way of expressing ourselves to the general public in a way they can value. As a group, Geeks no longer care about the disapproval of the masses. Our time has come, and those who can't enjoy geek life are welcome to go elsewhere and do their own stuff.

My daughter (update time), like most young ladies with rampaging hormones, found herself attracted to pretty hunks. She found out, because we told her to talk to the pretty hunks, that way too often pretty is all they have, what they are coasting on, and most of them are bound for dead end lives. She found herself spending more time with her geek friends. She now works, and works hard, as a floor stocker at Fry's. She impresses her bosses and coworkers not only with her ability to work, her quick understanding of every task assigned her, and her refusal to ask someone else to do her job for her because she's cute and female. Then they start talking with her and are awed with her depth of knowledge about computers, film, music, and history. She's already been told she will survive the after-Christmas purge. She is very fond of helping the male geek and nerd customers who have problems expressing themselves. She knows what questions to ask and pulls information out of them better than the regular salespeople. She's proud to be a geek, sees no shame in the classification, and wants to go to film school, not to act, but to write, direct and produce. I think she might live that dream, she has the talent and the brights to do the work, and the charisma to get people to listen to her.

Reportedly, more than once the male geek customers have come back to ask for the pretty redheaded geek girl who helped them last time. I need to get a new picture of her up. It is an inclusive subculture now. From what I've seen lately, a lot of the geeks are helping their nerd friends learn to socialize. Very cool.

Kirra, imagine a large flashlight without a lens, but with some interesting padding inside. Now you don't have to google 'fleshlight'.

I did some time ago because I thought the term was funny. Spent some time just shaking my head over the geekishness of the sex toy. We are invading everywhere.

First off, way TMI.

Second off, that depends on whether you fit dark's definition of a geek. You're assuming that you do, and then asking if you fit. Yay circular logic.

And, FWIW, geek stopped being an insult back in the 90's when .com was making everybody rich.

I'm pretty much in agreement with the "nerd with better social skills" definition.

  • Dorks are people who are near-fetishly obsessed with a very small number (often one) of "geeky" or "nerdy" interests: comic books, Star Trek, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, their 12th level wizard, etc. They are those individuals who are so intensely focused on their chosen pasttime that they don't have time for anything else.
  • Nerds are obsessed with some mathematical or scientific pursuit and have turned their obsession into a paying job, but for all that they are rocket scientists or biochemists or whatever, they can really only interact socially with others of their chosen profession because the language of their life's work is the only language they know how to speak/understand.
  • Geeks are like a hybrid of dorks and nerds in that they have at least one area of interest that they've turned into a paying job (IT professionals, for example) in addition to one or more purely recreational interests (comic books, D&D, CCGs, etc) but the variety of interests they have and the fact that they don't delve as deeply into these pursuits as the more highly-focused individuals leaves them with the ability to conduct social interactions with more people, and even the ability to have comparatively mundane conversations with people who have no nerdy/geeky interests.

My response to darksiege was purly an excuse to use "Fleshlite" in a conversation ;P

I really am not sure if I even fit the "geek" definition, which is why I was wondering how others defined it.

Damn it.. I bite the head off of one chicken in a heavy metal induced night of debauchery and I can never live it down.... oh wait....

Geeky chicks have an even better chance of getting laid. I do not think you truly understand the awesomesauce of a geeky chick. I do not think there is anything hotter than a geeky chick.

Kari Byron - Mythbusters

Spoiler:
Image

Byron graduated from Los Gatos High School and went on to study film and sculpture at San Francisco State University, graduating magna cum laude in May 1998 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Film and Sculpture. Byron spent the following year backpacking (mostly in South Asia, including the Himalayas) and was also involved in a number of art projects. She also worked as a secret Martini shopper for a liquor company.

She is married to artist Paul Urich. On February 25, 2009, it was announced that Byron was pregnant. Her daughter, Stella Ruby, was born on June 28, 2009.

Kari embraces her geekness. If you've never seen Mythbusters, give it a watch sometime. She filmed throughout her pregnancy. Usually she's on the show in jeans and a t-shirt, all comfy baggy.

I dunno if I believe this..put a geek girl side by side with a tall blond who dresses incredibly every second of the day and is never caught without make up.. And a guy always chooses that. The baseball cap and dressing comfy can't compare to that.

You know the wrong people then.

A woman who wears less makeup (to me) is a lot more attractive than someone who feels the need to always wear makeup.

You're hanging around the wrong guys then. To me, the tall blond that's all made up and put together is hiding something.

Give me a smart chick with a ball cap and a football jersey any day. (Sweat pants optional) ;)

I enjoy making friends with the tall blond all made-up type. Just friends, no passes, no drooling, just the hey how ya doing today type friends. I work with a couple of them occasionally.

The really egotistical ones get very confused.

Problem is, girls like Kari Byron are usually snatched up as quickly as the dolled-up blondes. It's all about physical attractiveness, unfortunately.

Well, that and he thinks I'm beautiful. But if I was all looks and no brain, he wouldn't have given me a moment of his time.

Ugh, I cannot stand it when a girl has to put on makeup and do her hair before rolling out of bed in the AM. There is no need to put on a show, your personality is infinitely more important than your appearance. Baseball cap and comfy clothes for the win.

Should've never lost sight of that, live and learn.
