ok - so this is totaly NOT an advice request hehehehe this is a cautionary post to other folks as ig'nant as I am So, first some show, then some tell! check out this link to see what brakes SHOULD look like. And here we have what MY brakes looked like after they FELL OFF of the car lol one two three four What you have there is an interesting story really. My brakes started grinding, and while John can easily replace them on a cougar, saving us lots of monies - we had not the cash to purchase the new brakes. So. . . a bit unwisely. . . we decided to go carefully and wait till we could get the parts. I became quite good at downshifting the automatic on public streets and using that to slow down most of the way before using my breaks, I left LOTS of space in front of me on the highways, etc. I BABIED those brakes. Untill there came a morning when the car was grinding on the way out of the driveway without me putting my foot on the brakes at all. And when I tried to return to my parking spot, I lost brake preasure all together. Thankfully, I was able to ease the car into its spot without running into anything. Skip ahead and John finds my brake pad lying in the driveway all by its lonesome! Skip further ahead and you find that not only did I obviosly need new pads on that wheel, but I had been grinding my rotar down with the remnants of the pad! Sweet! So ye see how in the pic of the edge of the rotar one side is thicker than the other? its not supposed to be I'm lucky they didnt fail on me in a more dangerus situation and VERY aware of it. When your brakes make noises you dont like - PARK THE CAR! This has been a public service announcement |

Been there, done that, junked the car when the gearbox failed from all the downshifting to simulate braking. It was pretty old when I got it, and I didn't pay much for it so i wasn't horribly upset. Still - shame on you, you're a car babe, you know better. Or is that Lydiaa or Sassandra? |

/lecture on I was taught this growing up and have heard it from many different experts along the way. "There are two things with your car you should never neglect. Everything else can wait or be ignored, but always take care of your brakes and your tires." They are the two most important safeety features on your vehicle. Do not ignore them. You cannot afford to ignore them, as it can lead to costly repairs or terrible accidents. Inspect your pads if you hear any noise. Change them if damaged or worn. Inspect your tires at least once a month and after hitting any object or pothole. Rotate your tires every five thousand miles, it will prevent major wear spots and extend the life of your tires (ran a pair of 60K mile tiers to 112 and finally had to replace them). /lecture off For the safety of you and everyone in or around your vehicle, please follow this advice. |
