Adam Smith, The Wealth of Nations, V. 2 wrote:
The interest of the dealers, ... in any particular branch of trade or manufacturers, is always in some respects different from, and even opposite to, that of the public. ... The proposal of any new law, or regulation of commerce, which comes from this order ought always be listened to with great precaution. ... It comes from an order of men... who have generally an interest to decieve, and even to oppress, the public and who... have, upon many occasions, both deceived and oppressed it.

No, although he was right about quite a few things.

A while back, on an old incarnation of the Glade I was a bit dickish to Khross over his opposition to my erroneous notion that Smith was certainly not the father of Marxist thought. As I have continued to research Smith, I came across that passage, and felt I owed Khross an apology.

It sounds to me like he's arguing against government-granted monopolies like the East India Company and such.

Short Version: Marx wasn't working in a vacuum.

Not So Short Version: Marx used the work of Smith, Hegel, and some not so remember German economists to come up with Das Kapital.
