Allergies are kicking my tusch the last couple of days. Post nasal drip, coughing up phlegm, not sleeping much. Add to that this morning the main building at the marina a mile away burned down last night and the wind headed this way. What I can smell is smoke. Whine, moan, etc. What do you do for allergies? |

Usually just over-the-counter loratadine (i.e. Claritin, or in my case, the Walmart store brand version thereof). It doesn't solve my allergies (I have terrible outdoor allergies, mostly year-round, but particularly in the spring), but it keeps the worst at bay, and if I mitigate my exposure to the outdoors (as I am naturally wont to do), I stay pretty happy. It also cuts a lot of my pet allergies, so that's a nice added bonus. |

Mostly, I just try and keep people away from me, because I get a sinus infection that lasts for a couple months, and the constant headache makes me irritable. |

I hunt down the source and execute it with prejudice. |

Sacramento has the second highest level of trees per area in a capital city in the world (Paris is first). The city is very proud of these trees and hunts down and beats tree killers. Unless they happen to be judges, but that is another story. Not going to happen, though I may drive to the coast this weekend. |

I live in the Willamette valley and don't suffer from allergies. The pollen, it does nothing! |

I celebrate the diversity that makes us all different. Just wish I wasn't so sensitive to this junk in the air.. |

Michael, With the limited information you provided I take it you are an occasional sufferer? If you cope most of the time and are looking for relief from a nasty bout I would have to agree with Hopwin foremost and encourage you to try removing the source. Air filtration and even a dust-mask outside if you know the pollen is heavy. Other than that a generic antihistamine (bendryl) might prove helpful. Not familiar with any herbal remedies for allergic reaction. Something new to investigate Plant protein? |

Yes Adrak, its only during the heavy pollen season in the spring and the leaves dropping in the fall that I suffer like this. Sacramento is a wonderfully diverse source of pollen, as the city has encouraged the planting of anything and everything. It proves that almost anything can be grown here, which is a great thing for (what was formerly) a mostly agricultural area. Hopwin and you make a good point. I need to go to the store later anyway, I'll pick up some masks to see if they help. If I can get over to where they sell reasonable air purifiers, I'll try that too. I was just thinking of removing all the trees in the area earlier, not a real possibility. I have no pets, so its not pet dander. |

Micheal, you should head out into the desert for a few days and let your head and chest dry out. |

I've been thinking about that, amusingly enough. Getting up to Reno, or a few miles outside is usually sufficient, we'll see. |

Reading about plant sterols and allergy, looks promising. |

When mine flare up, I usually go with citirizine (Zyrtec generic). It helps with the breathing and I usually sleep much better. Downside is it's a 24 hour pill, and they do tend to cause a little drowsiness. |

Well now, I understand why my normal run of remedies hasn't been working. Abscess, deep enough it wasn't obvious as a toothache. I go in for a root canal on Monday. |

Hate to think you might suffer longer than need be. I can personally bear witness to efficacy of Echinacea (powdered root) for relief of this type infection. Major benefits within 12 hrs. *If Tolerated* Simmer 1 to 2 grams of Echinacea (powdered root) for 10 minutes in enough water for a large mug of tea. Feel free to add pain relief (california poppy, passion flower *caution*) and raspberry leaves for taste. Strain in cheesecloth or coffee filter. Sweeten to taste. Save the filtered material and use as a compress. Truly Amazing! Echinacea in Infection usda |

Thanks Adrak If I can get the energy up to go to the co-op i'll give it a try. The only Echi left in the house is probably in what's left of my wife's jars, and at least 9 years old. |

Yes, that probably wont do. My personal experience has been with (Echinacea purpurea), and it was powdered root. It would be very aromatic and numb/tingle the tip of your tongue when drank in a tea. I did find this interesting, although I can't comment on the merits of other plants mentioned in this material. (Echinacea angustifolia) - Elk Root wikipedia Quote: Native Americans learned of E. angustifolia by observing elk seeking out the plants and consuming them when sick or wounded, and identified those plants as elk root. A non-drowsy antihistamine... citirizine is fine for most people, alternatively there's Fexofenadine (120 or 180mg). For the nose you could either go for a psudoepherine product which dries your nose from the inside out, or go with a saline or oxymatazaline spray which loosens mucus and clears it from the out side in. take lots of hot showers (steam helps with blocked noses) and become a hermit for a couple of days.. eventually the flowering will pass and you can go outside and kill everything with DDC. |

Lydiaa, All of the cetirizine I've seen here in the U.S., including the name brand stuff (Zyrtec) has a drowsiness warning on it, and by my experience it does indeed make me drowsy. http://www.drugs.com/sfx/cetirizine-side-effects.html drugs.com wrote: Cetirizine
Drowsiness; dry mouth; stomach pain (in children); tiredness; trouble sleeping (in children). Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur when using Cetirizine: Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue; unusual hoarseness); dark urine; fainting; fast or irregular heartbeat; mental or mood changes; persistent fatigue; seizures; severe dizziness; unusual bruising or bleeding; yellowing of eyes or skin. |

Interesting... There might be a difference in normal dosaging... It's also a norm to put drowsiness indications on most antihistamines just to cover thingys... I need coffee... brain stopped ticking after lunch >.< |
