A steam generator is used in pressurized water reactors as a means of transporting the thermal energy from the primary cycle into the secondary (non-contaminated) cycle. The primary cycle remains water (hence, pressurized) and the secondary side of the exchanger allows the secondary loops to saturate into steam. It's built to withstand two-phase flow through it without degrading.
