Semi-inspired by Hopwin's haunted house thread. What are your beliefs on: Ghosts/Poltergeists/Hauntings A.) I ain't 'fraid of no ghost! I want to believe! B.) More evidence needed C.) Indifferent D.) Nah, people are just seeing ordinary events they interpret as ghosts/haunting. Aliens/UFOs A.) They're out there . . . somewhere. I want to believe! B.) They're not only out there, but they are/have visited us! C.) More evidence is needed D.) Indifferent E.) Nah, people are just misinterpreting natural objects/events ESP/Exotic Mind Powers/Precognition A.) It's real! I want to believe! B.) More evidence needed C.) Indifferent D.) Nah, it's all bull -- there's only ESPN. Demons/Possessions A.) They're out there for our souls! I want to believe! B.) More evidence needed C.) Indifferent D.) Nah, just hoaxes for attention-seekers. Crypto-zoology (i.e. Bigfoot, Nessie, Moddey Dhoo, Jersey Devil, El Chupacabra, etc) A.) They're out there! I want to believe! B.) More evidence needed C.) Indifferent D.) Nah, they are just normal/unclassified animals, or other misinterpreted objects. Grand Government Conspiracies (i.e. Area 51, Illuminati secret societies, Government hiding advanced technology/cures from public) A.) They're hiding the truth! I want to believe! B.) More evidence needed C.) Indifferent D.) Nah, government has some understandable secrets, but not the tinfoil hat kind. Magic (i.e. not the illusionist/sleight of hand stuff in Vegas, but REAL, inexplicable magic) A.) Expellium! I want to believe! B.) More evidence needed C.) Indifferent D.) Nah, only exists in popular media -- only fake, Vegas magicians. My answers: A, B, B, B, A, D, B I'm a pretty firm believer in the paranormal, but I admit there is a lot out there that is just unknown -- could be paranormal, could be hoaxes/misinterpretations. After volumes of evidence spanned over entire recorded human history, there have got to be some supernatural things happening to us (or a part of the natural order we just haven't fully come to understand yet). |

D, E + C, D, D, D, D, D. I'm skeptical. Science has trained me to be so. I marked E + C for alien life, because the universe is so large that it is plausible that there is another form of life out there somewhere. Is it sentient? Who knows. Show me some scientific evidence please. |

A, C, D, B, B, D, D. When it comes to ghost, I've had too many experiences that lead me to believe they are real. UFOs, I have to imagine there is some intelligent life out there in the vastness of space, but have they actually visited here? Hard to say. I am leaning towards the no, but there's really no evidence to say they haven't. ESP or other mind powers is complete bunk. The people that say they have them are among the most annoying people alive. Demons or possession is another one of those things where there's just no way to know for sure. I can't say there is no such thing, but at the same time I honestly can't say there is any evidence pointing to them actually being real. Basically what I said about UFOs applies here. It seems kinda unlikely considering the technology we have, but we still can't really monitor the areas they are sighted. I can't say they are real or not real. Just not enough evidence. Government secrets? Illuminati and other such secret societies? I'm sure the government doesn't tell us everything. But people that think there is a secret organization that controls the world's governments and such are **** insane. As are the people that think the government is keeping miracle cures or practical advanced technology from the public. Lastly, magic. People that say magic is real are full of ****(going by my interpretation of the definition you've given). Magic has a lot of meanings to a lot of different people, but actual spells and ****? **** no. |

Ghosts/Poltergeists/Hauntings B.) More evidence needed I certainly believe it is possible, but convince me. Aliens/UFOs B.) They're not only out there, but they are/have visited us! In a a universe this vast, not only are the chances slim that we are the only ones out there, but they are also slim that we are the most advanced, and the most intergalactically curious. "I'm with Steve." (tm) Crypto-zoology (i.e. Bigfoot, Nessie, Moddey Dhoo, Jersey Devil, El Chupacabra, etc) D.) Nah, they are just normal/unclassified animals, or other misinterpreted objects. With the exception of the deepest oceans, we've ben everywhere. We know. We've been here a long time. Grand Government Conspiracies (i.e. Area 51, Illuminati secret societies, Government hiding advanced technology/cures from public) Non-option: Educated Pre-A See my posts in Hellfire. Magic (i.e. not the illusionist/sleight of hand stuff in Vegas, but REAL, inexplicable magic) Non-option: Really? Seriously... if I want to think about Aes Sedai I'll read Jordan. |

Ghosts/Poltergeists/Hauntings A.) I ain't 'fraid of no ghost! I want to believe! Aliens/UFOs A.) They're out there . . . somewhere. I want to believe! But have not visited ESP/Exotic Mind Powers/Precognition A.) It's real! I want to believe! Demons/Possessions A.) They're out there for our souls! I want to believe! Crypto-zoology (i.e. Bigfoot, Nessie, Moddey Dhoo, Jersey Devil, El Chupacabra, etc) B.) More evidence needed - Cryptozoology is legit but there is no Land of the Lost Grand Government Conspiracies (i.e. Area 51, Illuminati secret societies, Government hiding advanced technology/cures from public) D.) Nah, government has some understandable secrets, but not the tinfoil hat kind. Magic (i.e. not the illusionist/sleight of hand stuff in Vegas, but REAL, inexplicable magic) D.) Nah, people are just seeing ordinary events they interpret as ghosts/haunting. Aliens/UFOs A.) They're out there . . . somewhere. I want to believe! Fairly certain intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe. There are 100-400 billion stars in our galaxy alone. 30 to 70 sextillion in the observable universe. But also: E.) Nah, people are just misinterpreting natural objects/events That doesn't mean they've come here, that they're capable of doing so, or even that they're anywhere close to doing so if they can even find us. They may not even be as advanced as we are. I's entirely possible that no two intelligent species will ever locate each other. ESP/Exotic Mind Powers/Precognition D.) Nah, it's all bull -- there's only ESPN. Conservation of Energy, kkthksbi. Demons/Possessions C.) Indifferent. I believe demons, as in Satan, exist in the religious sense, but I don't think that they interact with the physical world in any observable or scientific way. If they ever did, they don't now, or if they do we have no way of determining this so its irrelevant. Crypto-zoology (i.e. Bigfoot, Nessie, Moddey Dhoo, Jersey Devil, El Chupacabra, etc) D.) Nah, they are just normal/unclassified animals, or other misinterpreted objects. Nothing more to be said here Grand Government Conspiracies (i.e. Area 51, Illuminati secret societies, Government hiding advanced technology/cures from public) D.) Nah, government has some understandable secrets, but not the tinfoil hat kind. Most every government "conspiracy" falls into the "I can't actually show any evidence that doesn't also have a much similar explaination, but since no one can prove a negative I insist on believing it anyways" or "That's possible, but why bother?" kinds of things that in a movie cause us to engage in Fridge Logic. Government secrets exist, but for the most part they're either A) embarassing put perfectly normal gaffes from the past B) something buearacracy is pointlessly keeping secret because its beauracracy or C) something for which there's a really good reason to keep secret because it'd be useful to our enemies, but which is utterly useless to the public, such as how many targets an AEGIS cruiser can engage at once. Magic (i.e. not the illusionist/sleight of hand stuff in Vegas, but REAL, inexplicable magic) D.) Nah, only exists in popular media -- only fake, Vegas magicians. Conservation of Energy and Conservation of Matter. These are two of the most basic fundamentals of science. Show me that one is being violated where there is no way any other explaination is involved and there is independant verification that no trickery is going on and then we can talk magic. |

Ghosts/Poltergeists/Hauntings: B.) More evidence needed Aliens/UFOs: A.) They're out there . . . somewhere. (and) E.) Nah, people are just misinterpreting natural objects/events. In short, they likely exist, but haven't been here. ESP/Exotic Mind Powers/Precognition: B.) More evidence needed Demons/Possessions: B.) More evidence needed Crypto-zoology: D.) Nah, they are just normal/unclassified animals, or other misinterpreted objects. Grand Government Conspiracies: D.) Nah, government has some understandable secrets, but not the tinfoil hat kind. Magic: B.) More evidence needed To clarify for all the "paranormal" things like magic, psychic abilities, etc., I think it's possible these things exist, though there is no real evidence of it as yet. However, if they do exist, they won't really be "paranormal" at all; they'll just be the result of some heretofore undiscovered principle of physics. |

Ghosts/Poltergeists/Hauntings A.) I ain't 'fraid of no ghost! I want to believe! D.) Nah, people are just seeing ordinary events they interpret as ghosts/haunting. Personal experience has a believer that it is certainly a possibility and exists, but at the same time, its equally plausible that "ghosts" are misunderstood events/circumstances and attributed supernatural underpinnings. Aliens/UFOs A.) They're out there . . . somewhere. I want to believe! E.) Nah, people are just misinterpreting natural objects/events Same with above. Statistically, its almost a guarantee that there exists life on other planets, or even a native of space itself, but I question whether they have ever visited here, and I think what a lot of people report as UFOs are naturally occurring or explainable phenomenon. That said, given how little time "humans" have actually existed and how far we can already venture into space... it doesn't take a great leap to think what an extra 20 million years would be... say for a planet that didn't have an asteroid wipe out 75% of life at one point and disrupt their "intelligent" species from continuing to evolve. ESP/Exotic Mind Powers/Precognition B.) More evidence needed In terms of pyrokinesis, telekinesis, etc... more evidence. Other things that sometimes get lumped into this category I think are unrecognized aspects of humanity, etc. Demons/Possessions C.) Indifferent D.) Nah, just hoaxes for attention-seekers. Crypto-zoology (i.e. Bigfoot, Nessie, Moddey Dhoo, Jersey Devil, El Chupacabra, etc)[/b] D.) Nah, they are just normal/unclassified animals, or other misinterpreted objects. This one is a bit of a trick, since all unclassified animals are technically within the realm of crypto-zoology, so yes, I think its been proven without question that these exist. However, the more fantastical creatures listed as examples I do not believe exist as reported. Grand Government Conspiracies (i.e. Area 51, Illuminati secret societies, Government hiding advanced technology/cures from public)[/b] B.) More evidence needed C.) Indifferent D.) Nah, government has some understandable secrets, but not the tinfoil hat kind. Magic (i.e. not the illusionist/sleight of hand stuff in Vegas, but REAL, inexplicable magic)[/b] E.) Technology |

Ghosts/Poltergeists/Hauntings Generally D.) Nah, people are just seeing ordinary events they interpret as ghosts/haunting, with a bit of B.) More evidence needed. But, whenever I come across Ghosthunters or whatever, I quickly move to C.) Indifferent, bordering on E.) Rage at why this tripe is on TV. Aliens/UFOs Kind of the same as with Ghosts, but since I have actually seen something that over the past 40 years I have desperately tried to fit into a conventional explanation, I lean toward B.) ESP/Exotic Mind Powers/Precognition B.) More evidence needed C.) Indifferent Demons/Possessions Well, devil-movies creep me out, but, no, can't say I go for this. D.) Crypto-zoology (i.e. Bigfoot, Nessie, Moddey Dhoo, Jersey Devil, El Chupacabra, etc.) I would love to believe that A.) They're out there! and that I can hunt one down with a boar-spear some day, but generally D.) Nah, they are just normal/unclassified animals, or other misinterpreted objects. Grand Government Conspiracies (i.e. Area 51, Illuminati secret societies, Government hiding advanced technology/cures from public) D.) Nah, government has some understandable secrets, but not the tinfoil hat kind. Magic (i.e. not the illusionist/sleight of hand stuff in Vegas, but REAL, inexplicable magic) D.) Nah, only exists in popular media -- only fake, Vegas magicians. Although, I do have to say, any of these can probably be explained by the idea of parallel universes co-existing with ours. Who says that things can't occasionally spill over? |

Yeah, misinterpretations/mis-identifications can occur on phenomena that you believe exists, but I was more going for: do you lean more toward the idea that these things are more often than not/always mis-identifications, as opposed to just sometimes? Also, to clarify on the Magic category -- I'm not necessarily talking about classic high fantasy magic like Lightning Bolt! or Magic Missle in the darkness, or Lvl 30 Fireball, etc. I'm more talking about the subtle magics of Wicca and Voodoo, etc. The influence on objects and people via supernatural means. As far as alien visitations -- I think there is just way too much evidence over a long period of time to rule out that they have not visited our planet. I doubt at this point that it is a monumental string of mis-identifications or a millennia-spanning conspiracy. |

Ghosts/Poltergeists/Hauntings So if you live in a house where the thing stands at the foot of your bed every night for over a year, you aren't really able to disagree with the idea of ghosts. Aliens/UFOs Somewhere, I'd guess. ESP/Exotic Mind Powers/Precognition B.) More evidence needed Demons/Possessions I'm not sure on this one. Crypto-zoology (i.e. Bigfoot, Nessie, Moddey Dhoo, Jersey Devil, El Chupacabra, etc) I always thought that any creature myth that spans several cultures, especially ones that had little contact when the myths originated, had to have some base in reality. Doesn't mean the myths are accurate, just that there was something that existed at some point in time to get them started. Grand Government Conspiracies (i.e. Area 51, Illuminati secret societies, Government hiding advanced technology/cures from public) D.) Nah, government has some understandable secrets, but not the tinfoil hat kind. Magic (i.e. not the illusionist/sleight of hand stuff in Vegas, but REAL, inexplicable magic) The flashy stuff, not really. The more subtle stuff, I could see it. |
