I currently have a LP gas grill, a small 2 burner hand-me-down from my older brother. The grill looks to be reaching the end of its life, and I figure with Memorial Day coming up, there may be some grills on sale.

What kind of things should I look for in a new grill?

Look for one that can hold at least a half of a cow at a time.

Well, it really depends on how much you want to spend.

You can start at the low end for about 200 bucks and go from there to the batshit insane levels of several thousand.

You beat me to it.

I would get one that burns charcoal, and has a smoker box on the side. There are some fabulous recipies for BBQ and grilling, and IMO they just can't be done as well on gas.

Gas is fine when you're doing large numbers of burgers, dogs, or even steaks or chicken for a party or something but most of the time I think charcoal is superior (although yes, it is more time-consuming.)

Yeah, I want to get a smoker, too. Um, smoking meats ... Thanks for the idea, maybe I'll smoke something soon.

What do you need in a grill? There's no point in spending money of features you'll never use or picking your grill based on what people here want in their grill. You can pick up a Weber charcoal kettle grill on Craigslist for under $50 that will be great for twice-a-month barbecues, or spend $3000 on a grill that looks like the bridge of the Enterprise and will give you a blowjob while you grill.

If you're cooking for one or two most of the time you don't need a huge grill.
If you don't intend to prep sides or sauces outside you don't need side burners.
Gas is better if you want to fire it up every night during the summer.
Gas is better if you want a quick grill.
Charcoal tastes better, unless lighter fluid is used
Charcoal grills are cheaper
Charcoal smokers are... well, smokers. If you intend to smoke meats you need one.
Charcoal grills are easier to maintain
Gas grills are rated in BTUs. More is better, with diminishing returns.
Gas grills are a bit more cold-weather friendly.
There exist gas grills with lava rocks for more even heat distribution
There exist gas grills with smoker boxes to add flavour
You can not do long, slow cooking on most gas grills, the burners won't go down enough.
Charcoal grills are often smaller, better for limited space.

So tell us some more about your grilling needs?

If you get a charcoal grill, make sure you invest the 10-20$ in a coal starter. It makes everything go more smoothly, and makes cooking on a charcoal grill not take so long.

Classic, does a good job, and if you're not grilling for a large crew, efficient and economical on fuel. I too prefer charcoal.

I'm looking to feed about 1-4 people, in general. Steaks or burgers around 1-2 times a week. I'm generally looking more for convenience and ease of use than reaching the pinnacle of grilling. I don't think I am interested in smokers.

It's the Jenn-Air Jameson model.

I found that pretty amusing. Sorry, don't do gas, don't have any recommendations, but Taamar seems about right on. I can't imagine you're gonna need more than a basic model, really.

A fantastic investment at only $3k.

In that case, any square or kettle-style charcoal grill will probably be perfectly adequate. If you get a chimney starter, charcoal is just about as convenient as gas; 15-20 minutes to have your coals hot, which gives you plenty of time to season your meat and whip up any sauce or anything you'd like to put on it.

You can probably find one like this for $30-$40; a chimney starter should be no more than $10. If you happen to know someone who does simple metal fabrication, like maybe a kid in metal shop class, they can probably make you one for a few bucks, or even free.

I have one of these:

I also have a charcoal grill and a charcoal smoker, but when I just want to get grilling quickly, propane is ready on command. This grill gets really freakin hot and it only takes maybe 5 minutes to warm up. It's decent sized, and it's around 200 bucks. Everything else in the price range was flimsy, but this thing is very well built for the price.

It has three burners + a side burner. The grill part is bigger than past grills I have owned. I can fit 12 good sized burgers on it at a time and still get em cooked.

My recommendation: You want large, thick iron grills on your grill. Likely a very large iron plate to go on top of it.

You don't want large holes on the sides of the grill, you want to keep as much heat in as possible.

You want a grill that can get super hot on one side, a searer is nice (but not necessary... but it is nice). For the absolute juiciest steaks, the best way to cook them is to sear room-temperature steaks on very high heat fast (like 2 minutes per side if they are over an inch thick, at most) and then use indirect heat to bring them up to temperature (as well as letting them rest for at LEAST 5 minutes).

I looked at that grill, but it doesn't seem to have good reviews. The customer reviews on the Home Depot website didn't impress me, and this review didn't either.

I've honestly never tasted a difference between charcoal and gas grilled food. Then again, that may be due to the sauce slathered on.

Really tho, if all you are wanting to do is grill, just about any grill will do. The big grills with all the bells and whistles are generally for the larger volume, Big Al's Texas BBQ Grill-Pocolypse affairs (i.e. people who take their grillin' seriously).

I went a little overboard on my last grill, but a friend of mine works for Brinkmann's and gets a 50% discount, so I got a 6 burner Brinkmann Pro series with a side burner on one end and a insulated container on the other side.

I do miss charcoal, though, and though the price is insane, this is supposed to be an amazing grill. And I'm thinking this will be my next grill. Guy I was talking to about it said that it heats up as fast as a gas grill, and the heavy ceramic lets you use a lot less charcoal to do it up.
