Our back-up forum has died.

We didn't use it much after this forum was up and running, and thanks to our management team (Dashel and Mookhow, with the esteemed Moobot) we haven't experienced much downtime. I just checked on the old board and found the Service Announcement below, dated May 24, 2010

Does anyone feel the need to do anything about this, i.e create a new backup board for us to check if/when we are unable to access 4.0?

Hello, due to server issues, the forum you were trying to access is currently offline and unavailable. Our deepest apologies as we are currently working on options to restore the server and recover the data from it. The forum was running on an older version of forum software and is making it difficult to bring the forum back online.

We do not have a timeline of when this forum can be brought back online, nor can we guarantee that we'll be able to bring the forum back online.

You are free to make a new forum from our homepage.

As we are spending all our efforts trying to bring your server back online, we cannot answer individual questions, but have put a few frequently asked questions below.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Where is my forum?

The data is stored on one of our servers that suffered a hardware failure and at the moment we cannot access any of the data.

Why wasn't I contacted about this?

Our older forum software which this forum was running didn't have a mechanism to email all admins like our new software does. With the server being down, there was no way to recover email addresses from our databases.

Why should I start a new forum on your service?

Once again, our apologies in this matter. You don't have to create a new forum on our service, we are offering this as a free alternative. If you lost a forum, you are free to create a new forum here or any other service of your choosing. Please see the next question on why a new forum shouldn't suffer the same server issues.
How do I know your server won't crash again?

Your forum was running on older servers with an older software platform that did not allow for redundant backups and was not able to be distributed across our hosting provider, home to multiple servers across the globe.

Since 2009, we've offered a new forum architecture for all new forums created on our service. This technology is hosted safely across many servers around the world and has daily backups in place to ensure your data's safety. All new forums will have a much higher uptime guarantee, and we even offer a Pro plan that allows for backups and downloads of your forum (our old platform did not allow for this)

Are we backing up this board on a regular basis?

Mookhow has said he does on a regular basis. I tend to trust the man, so I believe our data is backed up regularly.

Take it on faith, the power of Moobot compels you.

I am making backups every 1-2 weeks. I can also set up a backup board on my colo server.

Given that, then, I don't think a back-up board is of any import.

I think, even with regular backups, it's important to still have a secondary meeting spot. Even if we don't have a backup board, but instead use Twitter, Facebook, or something. If the board goes down for a few days, or worse, if the board goes down for good, we need to have a place where people can get information about what's going on and what recovery plans we have.

Speaking of old boards, did anyone ever find out what exactly happened to BoardZero? Has Art ever contacted anyone ?

I periodically check, but to no avail. And I never received a word from Art, despite several emails inquiring. Sigh.
