"Truckin'"
Words by Robert Hunter; music by Garcia, Lesh, Weir
Copyright Ice Nine Publishing; used by permission.
(Grateful Dead)

Truckin' - got my chips cashed in
Keep Truckin - like the doodah man
Together - more or less in line
Just keep Truckin on

Arrows of neon and flashing marquees out on Main Street
Chicago, New York, Detroit it's all on the same street
Your typical city involved in a typical daydream
Hang it up and see what tomorrow brings

Dallas - got a soft machine
Houston - too close to New Orleans
New York - got the ways and means
but just won't let you be

Most of the cats you meet on the street speak of True Love
Most of the time they're sittin and cryin at home
One of these days they know they gotta get goin
out of the door and down to the street all alone

Truckin - like the doodah man
once told me you got to play your hand
sometime - the cards ain't worth a dime
if you don't lay em down

Sometimes the light's all shining on me
Other times I can barely see
Lately it occurs to me
What a long strange trip it's been

What in the world ever became of sweet Jane?
She lost her sparkle, you know she isn't the same
Living on reds, vitamin C and cocaine
all a friend can say is "ain't it a shame"

Truckin' -- up to Buffalo
Been thinkin - you got to mellow slow
Takes time - you pick a place to go
and just keep Truckin on

Sitting and staring out of a hotel window
Got a tip they're gonna kick the door in again
I'd like to get some sleep before I travel
but if you got a warrant I guess you're gonna come in

Busted - down on Bourbon Street
Set up - like a bowling pin
Knocked down - it gets to wearing thin
They just won't let you be

You're sick of hanging around and you'd like to travel
Tired of travel, you want to settle down
I guess they can't revoke your soul for trying
Get out of the door - light out and look all around

Sometimes the light's all shining on me
Other times I can barely see
Lately it occurs to me
what a long strange trip it's been

Truckin - I'm goin home
Whoa-oh baby, back where I belong
Back home - sit down and patch my bones
and get back Truckin on

Was in a coffeehouse with a friend right after work today (Ice Chai Latte) when this song came on over the stereo, softly, sweetly, picking up a little as the song kept going. Every person in the place over 45ish was smiling, a couple that looked to be in their 60s actually started dancing, and the young kids were bewildered, those that noticed anyway.

Is it true? Do you kids not know classics like these.

I smiled when I saw the thread title and before I even clicked on it I was humming it in my head. Thanks for the smile.

Eric Clapton and Jerry Garcia are stranded on a tropical island where they are captured by cannibals. Being gracious cannibals, however, they grant the two musicians a last request. Jerry thinks for a minute and then says "I'd like a guitar, so that I can play "Truckin'" one last time." The cannibals agree to his request, and then turn to Eric. He immediately responds with "Kill me before he plays that damn song!"

I'm a huger fan of the Dead than Khross. I am also a one-upper.

That said, this song is a bit overplayed IMO (as much as any Dead song could be). This, Casey Jones, and Touch of Grey. But I certainly don't change the station if they come on.

Time to bring back my old avatar for a while.

Well, he's angry, and a turtle. And the Red White and Blue Motif suggests Republican. Since you had the fetus sucking hillary, I didn't pair democrat.

No, no, you are not. This is not possible. By the by ... 4 ... 4 is the number of shows I need a live recording for at this point. 4 ...

My Dead Collection, including number of shows seen, vastly trumps yours, whipper snapper.

Guess you can count me in the foot-tapping crowd. First time I heard this song and really listed to the lyrics, some friends and I were driving up to a camping trip. I was sitting in the back seat on a Friday morning, having worked all night. The "I'd like to get some sleep before I travel" line came clearly through the sleep-deprivation haze, and I've realy loved the song ever since.

Thanks for the new ear bug!

Not if your age is correct.

I remember this song from either one of the Rock Band or Guitar Hero games. Other than that, the Dead are overrated. Don't really care for their music(probably because I've never been high).

See...I have a bigger problem with the fans than I do the music. There are some things that should not be smelled, a Dead show is one of them.

It was part of the first Grateful Dead pack for RB. I don't believe GH ever picked up this song.
