Several months ago, I developed some odd bruise-colored rash on my right hand after I was out gardening. At first I worried it might be poison ivy, but it never started to itch or burn. Eventually it blistered slightly, but it never became an irritant at all. It did not subside, however.

After trying a hydrocortisone cream which didn't work, I finally went to my doctor. She had no clue what it was, but prescribed an antifungal cream just to "do something" and sent me to a dermatologist. At this point, it had faded slightly, bit it was still obvious, especially on my fair skin. While in the waiting room, I encountered one of my son's former teachers, who warned me the doctor i was going to see "was an *******." Duly warned, I was somewhat surprised to see the doctor was a man in his 50's with 3 days growth of beard. All that was missing was the fake american accent and heavy limp.

He looked at his notes and said "Rash on your hands?"

I replied, "Just one."

"Which one?"

"My right hand."

"Are you right handed?"

"Yes..."

"What do you do for work?"

"I work with computers."

"No, that can't be it. Let me see your hand. Uhuh. It's a bit faded...did the rash used to be a darker, bruise-like color?"

"Yes."

"Do you regularly handle limes? Carrots? Celery? Figs?"

This was getting spooky.

"...I make a lot of lime-based cocktails..."

"Then you don't need to wory. You have Phytophotodermatitis. Your skin was exposed to the phototoxins in lime juice, then you went outside. The phototoxins react with the sunlight and your skin, causing what is essentially a mild chemical burn. Your margarita-tan will eventually go away. Your freckles won't though."

Now you just have to test his hypotheses by rubbing limes on your other hand and going out in the sun ; )

That is rather cool.

From the other perspective... I've begun to see issues for the past 5 weeks (roughly) caused by a particular outdated display driver.

Now, if someone escalates a report of certain behavior, I can predict with reasonable certainty the hardware configuration and driver version.

The titular character of the popular Fox show going on its sixth (seventh?) season this fall?

Hmm, not watching TV probably has much to do with my not knowing about this.

Wait, did you say "Fox" and "sixth (seventh?) season" in the same sentence? That show *MUST* be crap, or they'd have canceled it long ago.

Shel:

House is played by Hugh Laurie, who is a god of versatility and wit.

His charm shines out of the curmudgeonly House.

While I agree that Fox + long running show generally doesn't turn out to be a good show, this is a definite exception, though it can be formulaic.

Awesome story, Taly.

Oddly enough I have a similar thing on my thumb (that has been there for a year) which I recently saw a dermatologist over. I had that exact same slew of questions "Do you handle limes, et al?" Except, I am pretty sure that I don't.

A friend of mine in Los Angeles works on the crew of House. She has lots of good things to say about the actors.
