http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camponotus_saundersi

Quote:
Camponotus saundersi is a species of ant found in Malaysia and Brunei, belonging to the genus of Carpenter ants. It can explode suicidally as an ultimate act of defense, an ability it has in common with several other species in this genus and a few other insects.[1]

Defenses
Its defensive behaviours include self-destruction by autothysis. Two oversized, poison-filled mandibular glands run the entire length of the ant's body. When combat takes a turn for the worse, the ant violently contracts its abdominal muscles to rupture its body and spray poison or glue in all directions.[2][3] The ant has an enormously enlarged mandibular (abdomen) gland, many times the size of a normal ant, which produces the glue. The glue bursts out and entangles and immobilizes all nearby victims. [4][5]

wow.

I believe there is another species of ant that does the same, but sprays an acid instead of glue.

Bees usually have one stinger well attached to the bee. Those bees who sting usually die upon using it. Wasps can have multiple deplorable stingers and live after using them. Whatever works best for the hive or nest. No sissy selfish insects around here.

Exploding ants look just like this one except they explode.

Nice one Hokanu. I see what you did there - and I approve.

Hok, that was awesome. :D

Why is there not a video of Camponotus saundersi exhibiting this behavior on the internet? Very curious. Someone somewhere must be making lots of money from research grants on this one.
