Post subject:  Pick a car to take on a road trip
So, which one of these card would you rather take on a road trip, a new Mustang GT convertible or a new Corvette Grand Sport convertible?

Personally, the one time I drove a Corvette, I didn't like it. I sank so low in the seat I had trouble over the dash. I don't know if the Mustang is better, but I chose that car anyways.

The mustang is definitely more comfortable for roadtripping. Once around the track i'd want the Vette.

All things being equal the Corvette. That's a 60k car whereas the Ford tops out around 40k ish I think. Just uh, dont take any really sharp turns on the corvette at speed. I'm told they are all over the road in situations like that. Straight ahead and it should pin you back nicely.

New Mustang is nice for the comfort. The Corvette would be fun though assuming you can open it up here and there.

Mustang, the whole history behind it as an everyman's sports car is so compelling and I feel like the Corvette just doesn't have it. It feels like it is priced to be the poor-rich man's sports car?

Grand Sport.

Since the C5, the Corvette has offered strong ergonomics and basic driving comforts (good, but not great buckets and very cold AC) considering its incredible bargain performance. While the interior is a bit economical, it has improved over the years, adding details like soft touch plastics rather and splashes of aluminum trim.

I like the 5th gen Mustang, especially the 2010 facelift, but until they abandon the cheap strut and trailing arm setup and go to a real indepedent suspension design, it will fundamentally be a 1980's design. While the live axle was finally done away with, the compromise of 3 link solid axle with IRS just doesn't make much sense. I'd rather have a solid axle with no IRS.

Yeah just to be clear both are awesome cars and you'll enjoy either one I'd bet. I'd love to drive around in a Mustang GT convertible, but the Corvette is just more car and in a different class.

Mustang gets better mileage, is more person friendly, costs less to insure, and is still a chick magnet without being a gold-digger magnet.

The Mustang also is not a Chevy, err Chevrolet - with apologies to Raell.

Headroom is rarely a problem for me. I have extra long legs for some reason. For example, I drive my father's Kia Rio(which is a tiny, tiny car) but I have plenty of headroom while my knees are up around my ears.

My Aunt June had one, but the solid top, not the rag-top. Selling it was one of the things she regretted most in life.

But for road trips, one of my roommates borrowed the family van for our epic road trip to Tijuana in 76 - 4 guys, lots of beer, a bunch of pills, some pot. That was when I found out pot gives me insatiable munchies. That is the reason I never got into pot.

It looked something like this but baby blue.

I'm going to own a 'Vette sometime in the foreseeable future, but we're in need of something for basic transportation in the next 6 months - since my wife's car had the transmission/computer problem a couple of months ago she feels she can't trust it anymore and wants to get a new car. If all I was going to use the car for was going back and forth to work I'd just keep her RAV4, but we do like to take long weekends 4 or 5 times a year for road trips (skiing in CO, swimming in the Gulf and general sight-seeing) and I'd like to get something fun to drive AND comfortable for 12 - 14 hours behind the wheel. The Mustang's tiny back seats appear unusable for humans, but they would easily hold the junk food, cooler, etc. The trunk's big enough in either of these cars for the overnight bags, so that's not a consideration there.

The convertible thing is a must-have, we're both "driving with the top down" kinda people. That limits our choice considerably. We think the Camaro and Challenger are great rides, but without drop tops they aren't contenders. I won't buy a car that isn't made by a US based company, so that's another consideration that limits the choices.

OR, I just buy the 'Vette now and use it for everything, but I'd really rather garage it except for special occasions. Of course, with a Corvette in the stable, I think I'd probably find excuses to make ordinary occasions special... ;)

In any case, I've got 6 months to decide and I figured I'd run the idea up the flagpole and see what folks would like to salute. Part of the fun of the decision process is the feedback I get from asking others what they think.

Ahh, that makes it different. This is o mere road trip. In that case I'd go for the 'stang. Keep your desire for the 'vette of your dreams simmering without diluting it with an inferior substitute.
