An Irish Wish

May the road rise up to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the sun shine always warm upon your face
And the rain fall soft upon your fields

Until we meet again

Found this one and I love it :)

We had a similar thread two or three Glade iterations ago, and Myrea pulled a quote I'd not seen before, but instantly adopted.

Mother Teresa wrote:
People are often unreasonable and self-centered; forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives; be kind anyway. If you're successful, you'll win some false friends and some true enemies; succeed anyway. If you're honest and frank, people may cheat you; but be honest anyway. What you spend years building, someone can destroy overnight; build anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous; be happy anyway. The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow; do good anyway. Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough; give the world the best you've got anyway. You see, in the final analysis, it's between you and God; it was never between you and them anyway.

Also, "Do not stand at my grave and weep:"

Mary Elizabeth Frye wrote:
Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am in a thousand winds that blow,
I am the softly falling snow.
I am the gentle showers of rain,
I am the fields of ripening grain.
I am in the morning hush,
I am in the graceful rush
Of beautiful birds in circling flight,
I am the starshine of the night.
I am in the flowers that bloom,
I am in a quiet room.
I am in the birds that sing,
I am in each lovely thing.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there. I do not die.

"Here endeth the lesson..."
-Spike, BVTS "Fool for Love"

Quote:
Anya: Are they gonna cut the body open?
Willow: Oh my God! Would you just… s-stop talking? Just… shut your mouth! Please!
Anya: What am I doing?
Willow: How can you act like that?
Anya: Am I supposed to be changing my clothes a lot? I-is that the helpful thing to do?
Xander: Guys—
Willow: The way you behave—
Anya: Nobody will tell me.
Willow: Because it's not okay for you to be asking these things!
Anya: But I don't understand! I don't understand how this all happens. How we go through this. I knew her, and then she's— there's just a body, and I don't understand why she just can't get back in it and not be dead... anymore! It's stupid! It's mortal and stupid! And... and Xander's crying and not talking, and... and I was having fruit punch, and I thought, well, Joyce will never have any more fruit punch, ever, and she'll never have eggs, or yawn, or brush her hair, not ever, and no one will explain to me why! [She begins to cry.]
Willow: [long pause] We don't know. How it works. Why.
-BVTS "The Body"

Quote:
Jean-Luc Picard: It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness; that is life.

-Star Trek:TNG "Peak Performance"

Quote:
Sebastian: How do you know the Chosen Ones? "No greater love hath a man than he lay down his life for his brother." Not for millions…not for glory…not for fame. For one person, in the dark, where no one will ever know or see. I have been in the service of the Vorlons for centuries, looking for you. Diogenes with his lamp, looking for an honest man willing to die for all the wrong reasons. At last, my job is finished. Yours is just beginning. When the darkness comes, know this: You are the right people, in the right place, at the right time.

Babylon 5 "Comes the Inquisitor"

Quote:
Catherine Sakai: While I was out there, I saw something. What was it?
G'Kar: [pointing to a nearby flower] What is this?
[Upon closer inspection, an insect is visible.]
Catherine: An ant.
G'Kar: "Ant"!
Catherine: So much gets shipped up from Earth on commercial transports, it's hard to keep them out.
[As Catherine is talking, G'Kar carefully picks up the ant.]
G'Kar: I have just picked it up on the tip of my glove. If I put it down again and it asks another ant, "What was that?", how would it explain? There are things in the universe billions of years older than either of our races. They are vast, timeless. And if they are aware of us at all, it is as little more than ants…and we have as much chance of communicating with them as an ant has with us. We know. We've tried. And we've learned we can either stay out from underfoot, or be stepped on.
Catherine: That's it? That's all you know?
G'Kar: Yes. They are a mystery. And I am both terrified and reassured to know that there are still wonders in the universe…that we have not yet explained everything. Whatever they are, Ms. Sakai, they walk near Sigma 957. They must walk there alone.

Babylon 5: "Mind War"

Quote:
Susan Ivanova: On your trip back, I'd like you to take the time to learn the Babylon 5 mantra: "Ivanova…is always right. I will listen to Ivanova. I will not ignore Ivanova's recommendations. Ivanova…is God. And, if this ever happens again, Ivanova will personally rip your lungs out!" Babylon Control out. [sighs to herself] Civilians. [looks up] Just kidding about that God part. No offense.
Babylon 5 "A Voice in the Wilderness"

Quote:
Elric: We are dreamers, shapers, singers, and makers. We study the mysteries of laser and circuit, crystal and scanner, holographic demons and invocation of equations. These are the tools we employ, and we know many things.
John Sheridan: Such as?
Elric: The true secrets, the important things. 14 words to make someone fall in love with you forever. 7 words to make them go without pain, or say good-bye to a friend who is dying. How to be poor. How to be rich. How to rediscover dreams when the world has stolen them. That is why we are going away—to preserve that knowledge.
Sheridan: From what?
Elric: There is a storm coming, a black and terrible storm. We would not have our knowledge lost or used to ill purpose. From this place we will launch ourselves into the stars. With luck, you will never see our kind again in your lifetime. I know you have your orders, Captain. Detain us if you wish. But I cannot tell you where we are going. I can only ask you to trust us.
Babylon 5 "The Geometry of Shadows"

Quote:
Sheridan: Have you ever had a long talk with Ambassador Delenn?
Ivanova: From time to time. Why?
Sheridan: She and the Universe seem to have a special relationship.
Ivanova: Yes sir. Don't we all?
Babylon 5 "A Distant Star"

Quote:
G'Kar: No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom. Against that power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand. The Centauri learned this lesson once. We will teach it to them again. Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.
-Babylon 5 "The Long Twilight Struggle"

Quote:
Susan Ivanova: This is the White Star fleet. Negative on the surrender. We will not stand down.
Captain Thomson, Earthforce: Who is this? Identify yourself!
Ivanova: Who am I? I am Susan Ivanova. Commander. Daughter of Andrei and Sophie Ivanov. I am the right hand of vengeance, and the boot that is going to kick your sorry *** all the way back to Earth, sweetheart! I am Death Incarnate, and the last living thing that you are ever going to see. God sent me.
-Babylon 5 "Between the Darkness and the Light"

Quote:
Never assume you understand the depth or breadth of a relationship between a husband and wife. It is more complicated and storied than you can imagine."
- Me

Quote:
I found out a long time ago, what a woman can do to your soul. Oh but she can't take you any way, you don't already know how to go.

The Eagles, "Peaceful Easy Feeling"

Quote:
My life so common it disappears
And sometimes even music
Cannot substitute for tears.
Paul Simon "The Cool Cool River"

Quote:
A self-ordained professor’s tongue
Too serious to fool
Spouted out that liberty
Is just equality in school
“Equality,” I spoke the word
As if a wedding vow
Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now

Coach Rig: Now, let's analyze what's been working for us.
[Long pause]
Coach Rig: NOT A GOD DAMN THING'S been working for us. Like this goddamn suit doesn't work for me... and this stinking tie... and this goddamned shirt. IT DOESN'T WORK FOR ME. YOU KNOW HOW TO PLAY WINNING HARD-NOSED FOOTBALL? YOU PLAY FOOTBALL LIKE ED GENERRO PLAYED FOOTBALL. A guy who gave his life for this football team. He was a 140-pound halfback, and HE PLAYED LIKE A GODDAMN WILDMAN! NO! LIKE A GODDAMN RAMPAGING BEAST! And that's the way you got to do it! YOU GO OUT THERE! YOU TEAR THEIR **** HEADS OFF, AND YOU **** DOWN THEIR NECKS! Let us pray.

For daws to peck at: I am not what I am.
- Othello

Quote:
How weary, stale, flat, and unprofitable
Seem to me all the uses of this world.

Hamlet, Act I; scene ii

Quote:
Senator: You come to us with no evidence, no record, no artifacts. Only a story that, to put it mildly, strains credibility... Are you really going to sit there and tell us that we should just take this all on faith?
Ellie Arroway: Is it possible that it didn't happen? Yes. . . . As a scientist I must concede that. I must volunteer that.
Kitz: Then why don't you simply withdraw your testimony and admit that this journey to the center of the galaxy, in fact, never took place?
Arroway: Because I can't. I had an experience. I can't prove it. I can't just explain it. But everything that I know as a human being, everything that I am tells me that it was real. I was given something wonderful, something that changed me forever: a vision of the universe that tells us undeniably how tiny and insignificant and how rare and precious we all are. A vision that tells us that we belong to something that is greater than ourselves, that we are not - that none of us is alone. I wish I could share that emotion, that everyone, if even for one moment, could feel that awe and humility and that hope that I felt, but... that continues to be my wish.

-Whenever you find that you are on the side of the majority, it is time to reform.
-Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it.
-Sometimes I wonder whether the world is being run by smart people who are putting us on, or by imbeciles who really mean it.
-Mark Twain

There is a quote attributed to Twain, but I can't find it, so I'll come close:
"When writing, always replace the word 'really' with 'damn' -- your editor will remove all the 'damn's and your work will be better for it."

"Guard with jealous attention the public liberty, suspect all who approach that jewel. Unfortunately nothing will preserve it but downright force. When you surrender that force you are ruined".
Patrick Henry

"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen." Samuel Adams

 Seriously though, I enjoy this passage from For Whom the Bell Tolls:

"So if your life trades its seventy years for seventy hours I have that value now and I am lucky enough to know it. And if there is not any such thing as a long time, nor the rest of your lives, nor from now on, but there is only now, when then now is the thing to praise and I am very happy with it."
