Some folks are kvetching that they're not photoshopped well, but these before-and-after photos from WWII are pretty interesting. |

Eh, they could be photoshopped better. Seriously, I do wish that they were more gracefully handled, given the painstaking work done to ensure that the modern-day photography matched up with the wartime photos. It's a somewhat sub-par execution, but a brilliant idea. That of course is the graphic designer in me talking. From a normal viewer's perspective, they're fantastic, and moving. I just wish they had a bit more feathering on the eraser. |

Screw the photo shop job. I am more impressed they were able to identify the locations and get the proper angles for the modern photos. |

Neat idea, but I would rather have seen the photo's side by side, than using the overlay thing... |

I do think the original idea is pretty genius, but I agree that it could have been done better. (Not by me, but someone else.) |

Yeah, I'd kind of like to see the originals, too. But, it is a nice efffect, I have to say. Many of them, toward the bottom of the page, are in Russia; someone on Slashdot pointed out that in second to last one (?), with the kids in the street, that it's entirely possible the old woman in the picture is also one of the kids. Kind of a fun thought. As someone who has tried to find spots depicted in old photos of WWII, yeah, I'm very impressed he was able to do that. I had a book on the Battle of Berlin with lots of photos, and when I lived there for a summer I could never reliably figure out which street a picture was taken on (it's a different story, of course, for the Reichstag, Brandenburg Gate, etc.). But without good documentation, it's really hard. |
