If you try to browse the forums later tonight, around 11pm Central, you may notice some issues. That's because we're moving to a new server and provider. We shouldn't lose any posts or anything, but there will be a transitional period while the new IP address propagates. The TTL for the DNS record is 4 hours. That means that it may take up to 4 hours for you to see the new site. Where are we going? Glad you asked! We're moving to a brand new server, just for us. Full root access, 20 gigs of HDD space, 350GB of monthly bandwidth. So, in addition to the forum, we should be able to set up some other stuff down the road. Like what? I dunno yet, I'm trying to make sure the forum migration is smooth first. What will you see tonight? Well, at 11pm Central, I'm going to disable the board. That means you'll just get a status message saying the forum is undergoing maintenance. At this time I'm going to take a snapshot of the current forum and copy it to the new server. Once that's done, I'll reenable the board. However, to keep the forum from losing too many posts, I'm going to lock all the forums except General. Yeah, sucks. But at least you can still post here while you wait for your DNS to propagate. Most people aren't around late at night anyways. I'll then modify the DNS records to point at the new server. Up to 4 hours later, when you load the forum, you'll be pointing to the new server. You'll know because the forums won't be locked. If you land on the new forum, then you're good to go. The new server's IP is: 205.186.146.172. |
