Some weirdo from Ohio. I think you forgot to ask the more important question, though -- who's in Atlanta this weekend? No actual Con attendance required. |

Ok, good ... I'm taking tomorrow off work. I've still not decided, given the difficulty of booking a room, if I'm driving up. Although ... |

Unloading my camera, including parade video that I didn't shoot (and haven't seen) -- I was securing my Bagley commission at the start of the parade and left the camera in the hands of one of Phe's friends (friend's brother? something). More detailed weekend highlights to follow soon when I'm done. Weekend summary: Was awesome. Saw Stan Lee in the wild, didn't brave the line for any of his panels, though. Jim Butcher is awesome, and evidently way more popular than anybody scheduling **** expected. I have dubbed my first DragonCon costume successful. Post-costume beard regrowth remains in the scruffy pre-beard stages. Bagley is awesome, USM #1 is signed. New forum avatar secured and in need of digitizing. |

My question asked and (mostly) answered at the Jim Butcher panel, courtesy of Farskee. Part 1 of the epic Firefly panel that I missed (but regret nothing!): YouTube's still trying to digest my parade video. I'll edit in later. |

Raell wrote: No wonder you got sick. You shaved off the beard! The costume demanded it! The notion of Samson themes informing my immune system's integrity amuses me, but falls flat, considering that I contracted Swine Flu last year without shaving it. To be fair, however, one of Farskee's friends brought the Swine Flu with him, though. |

Okay, I've been slacking. Some costume highlights at the Con for your geeky pleasure. The most awesome Deadpool costume I've seen to date: I was surprised to find a few very awesomely done Warhammer 40k costumes: Batgirl and Robin: Castle Crashers: These Blues Brothers were absolutely fantastic: Batman!: A Companion Cube (I felt sorry for the guy; I don't think he had armholes): LOTS of Blackest Night costumes -- A bunch of Red Lanterns I didn't get shots of (though there was a fantastic Laira that I didn't have time to stop). In that vein, though, Blue Lantern Flash: And a Kyle Raynor (with a light-up ring!): Abby, from NCIS -- I actually saw, I think, 3 of them over the course of the weekend, which was kind of a head-scratcher for me: Saw two Transformers costumes, I liked the Hot Rod better than the Bumblebee, who was kind of spindly from the waist down (and whose picture I misplaced): These two were fantastic. They carried around their bases, and would stop to pose for several minutes at a time (during which they were remarkably still, too... when I first encountered them, approaching obliquely from behind, I wasn't sure if they were actually statues or not). Drew a crowd, needless to say. Lara snuck in on my Avengers shot. Captain America was nearby, too, but involved in a conversation with another group, and I didn't want to interrupt: I caught up to the Cap later in Artist Alley: More Avengers for my collection (the chestpiece is a bit tough to see in the picture, but was pretty impressively done): Samuel L. ([Nick]) Fury: Marty McFly -- I actually noticed the hoverboard, first, and this was in the vendor room, so I did a double-take when I realized it wasn't some odd (and obscure) score of a purchase, but a full-blown costume: I'm not sure these two knew each other; I got the impression they were both standing nearby in the line, and chatted each other up due to matching costume source material. The Comedian and Rorschach: Saw several Kick-Asses and Hit Girls. These two were, IMO, the best of the group (though, as I pointed out to Farskee, all the Hit Girls were way too tall for the role...): A gutsy Cyclops costume (I mean, the only more dorky versions are the two that actually had the yellow underwear look!): Found a Leela in Artist Alley: My favorite of the Dr. Horribles. What set him apart? Wonderflonium and nailing the pose: Again, the pose sold this costume nicely: The TF2 crowd was out in force. Managed to find two Pyros consorting together despite their team rivalry: Found R2-D2 rolling around. The little kid was so cute, he initially hid behind his mom's legs when he rolled up: Spider-Woman: I was mad. Two seconds after I put my camera away, somebody else posed as a Falcon Punch victim. Captain Falcon: Two very awesome pulpy costumes, The Phantom and The Rocketeer, and it seemed they knew each other: Speaking of pulp, here's me with modern pulp revival author, Bobby Nash (modern owner of the Lance Star rights), after the Pulp panel (he wanted a picture with me, actually, saying "when I walked in and saw you, I said to myself, "This guy gets it" -- it's like [Lance] walked right off one of my pages!" I took it as high praise, made walking around in Atlanta all summer's day in a leather jacket worthwhile. =) Couple more shots of me, waiting in line to see Cinematic Titanic with Mr. Skee (condensation on the goggles was a problem, and I didn't think to make a trip to paper-towel land to remedy it before the pictures): |

Oh, I forgot to add -- it was interesting going in costume. This was my first time doing a costume for, well, much of anything outside of Halloween, and certainly my first time walking around in public (on the streets and subway of Atlanta!) in one. I think it was made more interesting because I wasn't going as a specific character. It was a costume really inspired by my love of several similar sources and settings: Pulp adventure, Crimson Skies, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, Alpha Shade, Ignition City, and historical barnstorming chief amongst them. But what was most interesting was that people would come up to me and say, "Hey, you're X, right?" where X was some assumption based on their own biases, exposures, and age bracket. The ones I remember getting were: * Tom Selleck from High Road to China (not specifically, but nailed the time period and type of influences, Ma'am!) * A World War II pilot (uh.. no. No headphones in the helmet, the jacket's not lined for high altitude flight, and the jacket's a style that was phased out before the war, nor is the shirt any type of uniform -- this one was a teenage kid, though, and getting into some obscure knowledge (military jacket patterns), so I didn't burst his bubble 'cause I'm sure they just don't cover pre-WWII very well anymore in school) * The pilot in the Mummy (again, right type of source material!) * A barnstormer (pretty much spot on!) * Something from The Last Exile (apparently an anime I hadn't heard of) |

Yeah, technically, the more precise answer is "An anime that had been mentioned in my presence a few times by a few different sources (the Alpha Shade guys talked about it in their podcasts a few times, too), but that I've never been exposed to and don't retain name recognition of." "Hadn't heard of" was sort of a shorthand that conveyed the important part of the equation, that I didn't know what they were talking about at the time. |
