1) Are you ever going to do anything important to the rest of the world?

2) How do you feel about that?

Try to answer without making fun of it. If we get to a third page on this feel free to go wild.

1) Though I think my work is important, it is not earthshaking. My work will never reach the radar of the media, I will never be famous.

2) I'm okay with that. Not everyone gets their 15 minutes of fame, I don't need mine.

1) I will never know the answer to this question. If I do accomplish something with worldwide ramifications, I will never find out in this lifetime.

2) I can't allow uncertainty about the future to cripple the enjoyment of my day to day life.

1) I hope that the work I do in medicinal chemistry will help quite a few people, even if indirectly. I hope that one day the work I do teaching will directly help those that I teach.

2) If it helps, it helps, if it doesn't, it doesn't. I don't make my decisions based on what I think the large picture impact will be.

1) The whole world? No. I do hope that a future endeavor can be used/appreciated by certain communities of people

2) I'm okay with a smaller audience.

nope

and very comfortable, some of us want to avoid the spot light. As long as I have the love of family and friends I am fine.

No, everything I do is pretty unimportant on a global, national, state, county, and even city, hell even neighborhood level. And I am perfectly fine with that.

1. Nope

2. Don't really care.

Edit: I have been thinking about this. Even if I did something earth shaking to leave a note worthy mark in human history, I wouldn't be very happy about it. I don't want people looking at my life the way they would if something happened. I will just be happy with the fact that I have two kids to help extend my family line.

1. The work I do will at some point play a part in saving service men and women's lives. And I believe a stronger U.S. military is a good thing for the world. I play a very very small part, but it is something.

2. I'm ok with my very tiny part. I'm definately not a spotlight type of guy.

1. As an organization, certainly for the citizens of our country if not the entire world, but it is usually indirect help and assistance (both things that happen automatically and help people live safer, healthier lives as well as providing assistance during emergencies). I realize my part in all this is rather insignificant, but part of an important team.

2. I'm OK with who I am. Yes, I am proud of what I do and hope that directly or indirectly I can help people when they need it. No, I don't want or need public praise for self fulfillment.

If you asked the first question meaning am I ever going to be famous or directly imapact lives globally, then the short answer is no.
However, I do believe that indirectly, yes, I will be doing something important for the rest of the world by being a good wife, mother, and friend.
I used to daydream a lot about being a famous rockstar or curing cancer or being the next Mother Teresa. I don't think I once daydreamed about being a mother. Heh.
My own mom used to tell me "If you want to change the world, you have to start in your own backyard."
Yes, the world needs presidents, literary greats, scientists who find cures and solutions to global problems, etc. But every single one of those people had people who influenced their lives along the way whether it was a brief profound moment that turned them in the right direction, or a long term relationship with a parent or dear friend.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, I'm ok with not being one of the "important" people. I'm ok with my children not growing up to be one of the "important" people...but If my family is happy and goes on to touch the lives of other people, to help, to love, to comfort, to foster growth, to heal, to spread happiness, then that means way more to me then being known world-wide for any single act.

But that doesn't stop me from having the occasional daydream about being onstage with my guitar. ;)

1. It's possible because I have the personality potential.

2. I don't care right now. Not my intention.

1) I want to, but I'm not sure if I'll get there. I also think you can do small things to affect the world, though.

2) I don't need or want fame. If I do affect the world, I just want people's lives to be better as a result.

I had plans at one point of triggering a universe destroying process using physics. At least I would have made a difference.

You work with the LHC?

1. I used to think I might. It was certainly something I aspired to when I dreamed of going into research -- discovering something that would lead to cool stuff for the world. That ship has sailed, now, I fear, and I've missed the boat.

2. I'm a bit disappointed.

1) It depends on the definition of important; however, under most definitions I can freely say "no."

2) Somewhat mournful.

1) Probably not on any level of real importance to the world as a whole.

2) I'm ok with that as long as I can have a positive effect on just a few people. I already know I had a good effect on my little brother and sister and I inspired on of my art students to go into art education. That's enough for me.

1)In the context of a deterministic universe, this question is irrelevant. However, in the context under which you intent, I will say no.

2)Either way, I'm fine with it.
