You all know what I'm talking about.

The last Chilean miner has been freed from 69 days of entrapment. Thirty-three men walking around alive when no one with any sense would have given odds on any of them making back to the surface, much less alive, before the note in red ink came back up on the end of an exploratory drill..

Best feel-good story of the year, heroic rescue, all the men rescued, international help, even the USA gets a pat on the back for helping out with a fantastic drilling team.

How do you feel about it?

I expected one giant Chilean Hulk to emerge, after he had eaten all the others.

Sucks they gotta wear shades for like the next month!

The whole thing is pretty trippy, really, and extremely happy for them. But, wow, 69 days underground. I've done some time caving, can't imagine being confined like that for that long. Pretty manly to come out more or less in one piece.

I'm happy for them and their families and I can see that it makes for decent 24hr news cycle fodder. Yet, I cannot fathom how people have personally invested so much in this, while, by comparison they totally ignore greater human triumphs/tragedies closer to home and around the world.

Like what?

I'm happy they are out. And watched with some moderate interest.

I think some of the things that made this story a great one and inspirational are:

1. The tale of survival against all odds
2. The teamwork required to pull it off
3. The way people rallied across the world
4. The technology required to accomplish the task
5. And in the last 24 hours, the fact that they were successful

It's a feel good story where everyone survived. That's about as American as apple pie.
