No time to watch, but I assume this is proof that dolphins understand that what they are seeing in the mirror is themselves? I've seen these tests before, and they are quite fascinating. Only a handful of animals on the planet are self-aware at that level (and most of them are great apes). But dolphins certainly join that elite group.

Edit: So to expand on that "marker proof" they took it several steps further (I saw said documentary). They would observe dolphins going to check out their mark in the mirror. But then they would take a closed marker to the dolphin and pretend to leave a mark on their body. The dolphin would swim to the mirror, and would spend a few minutes twisting and turning trying to find the mark that it thought was there.

I find it all very fascinating.

That's pretty cool. They're also one of the few animals that researchers think engage in sex for other than just procreation. Cool animals.

Humans, bonobos, chimpanzees, orangutans, gorillas, elephants, macaques, bottlenose dolphins, orcas, and magpies. (yes, a bird.)

Interestingly, humans fail the self-awareness test until about 18 months old. (No idea what age the other animals manage to pass it...although apparently not every macaque, gorilla or magpie passes even as an adult. Some of those species are more self aware than others.)

I'm not sure if bottlenose dolphins are actually smarter than all other dolphins, they're just more heavily tested.

If recognizing yourself in a mirror is the test for self-awareness, then I bet some robots are.
