They're probably union, DS.

Good chance he'd been up for 20 hours trying to clear snow in other places too. Side streets like that aren't exactly the first on the list to get done.

So what? Is being able to clear the streets without destroying cars an unreasonable expectation?

Unlikely (if he's union).

Don't they declare snow emergencies and if u park in the street it's at your own risk of damage to your vehicle?

No snow emergency was declared in NYC. Precisely because cars aren't really allowed to be on the streets. As for the vehicle, it was a mistake and the City will need to pay for the cost of repairs or a new vehicle. I'm surprised with all the cars and plows on the road, this doesn't happen more often.

Here's an NYT article on one crew's experiences. At the end, you'll notice that some of the guys got permission to do a 24-hour shift.

Sure as long as you don't mind waiting for days before the roads are clear. Fact is that you can't clear that much snow from that big a city in a reasonable timeframe without long long days. In the end the couple guys that make some bad decisions in their frustrations of dealing with stupid drivers and obstacles all day long is easily cheaper than the effects of waiting the longer time to get the roads cleared making sure that everyone only works a normal shift.

Then there's the part where everyone's going to ***** about taxes because of the huge stress these storms are putting on cities budgets.

New York was a mess, especially the outer boroughs. Staten Island and Queens are only just now getting plowed. It's quite the kerfuffle, people are really pissed.

Awesome.

Speaking of cars in the snow, I will repost the video that always brings a smile to my face whenever I am feeling down.

They are stationary cars parked in the streets. That's ridiculous. Cars being parked on the side of the street is a normal expectation especially in NYC. And the population density in Manhattan, Bronx and Brooklyn isn't even as bad as across the Hudson in Jersey. Jersey City, Union City and Hoboken are all much worse. They need to be equipped to deal with cars in the road - that's where they are working.

What proof do you have they worked supposed 20 hour shifts? It's just hearsay to try to bolster your point. They work around the clock. That's expected. It's a semi-emergency situation. I've worked 12-14 hour shifts switching between days and nights turning wrenches and hoisting heavy pieces of equipment in a 100 degree environment with basically no room between obstacles where I can't bump any valves or levers or even wipe sweat that is itching like crazy off my nose because I could contaminate myself. Furthermore, I've worked alongside guys who drive all over doing nothing but those sorts of jobs and I never once saw them destroy a piece of equipment or cause any event that could have led to a criticality accident because the conditions were supposed so demanding. And I've never heard them say anything about their job being too hard or demanding.

They aren't building pyramids out of 20 ton blocks with no machines or trying to construct an submarine transcontinental tunnel. They are clearing streets of snow. There are some cars there. There is a lot of snow. The fact that is unreasonable to expect those crews not to DESTROY, not just bump or scratch, but DESTROY a car performing such a pedestrian task demonstrates the standards for intelligence are unreasonably low.

Standards for competence, Raf. I'm pretty sure you could train somebody with reasonably low intelligence to perform such a task with pride and care.

In other news, I'm preparing a proposal to submit to the Federal Gov't to install a giant, subterranean street cleaning system. It will consist of robotic arms that come out of trap doors in the sidewalk, gently lift cars off the street, and then intense heating coils that will flash the snow to running water for the sewers (also now heated) to drain. Once the asphalt has cooled back down below 100 degrees Fahrenheit, the cars will be lowered back down.

It will be expensive, and incredibly labor intensive, but think of all the jobs it'll create with my anticipated cost of 800 billion dollars! And we'll avoid these economy-killing labor strikes that are costing the city however many millions.

I just find it more frustrating than most, I suppose.

However, your street cleaning system will not get the bid over my proposed JEtsons VacuUm TUbe Transit System (JEVUTUTS) project. If will Revolutionize the Way America Commutes (tm) and generate 200 times the job while expanding the GDP by eleventy billion fold.

Post is accusing the union of intentionally going slower as a "screw you" protest.

Probably going to end up hellfiring this thread :)

Back to the original video, you park to block ion a snow plow with a miserable turning radius, you deserve what you get. The tow truck driver was trying to mInimize damage to the parked cars but still get the snow plow back in action. Omelet, eggs, etc.

The plow had a full length of room with the bucket lowered. He has room to drive forward a good 6 or 7 feet (or get pulled in that direction) forward if he had raised the bucket over the car in front of him, giving him room to back out with the shallow angle they were pulling from.

My hometown had winter storm parking bans, there were plenty of driveways and parking lots for folks who needed 'em. I havent seen any such bans since I moved to NY (granted I'm on LI not in NYC) I cant imagine there are a ton of places to park one's car in the city or more folks would own cars in the city. That would explain the multitude of cars parked on the streets if my logic is at all sound.

That said - it was fairly apparent from moment 1 that they needed to try something else. Then they hit the car, and instead of stopping, they just keep going like it doesnt mean a thing. The first hit I'll give them, they're probably wiped, its been a long night/morning, stuff happens. its the lack of care once they saw what they were doing that makes these guys a couple of prize douche bags. ;)
