You know...with science! http://io9.com/5730895/ Quote: Swine flu gives its survivors supercharged immunity, could create universal flu vaccine
The swine flu pandemic of 2009 was one of the worst flu scares in recent memory, even if its actual effects ended up being relatively moderate. Now something unambiguously good could come of all this: a universal flu vaccine. As many as sixty million people were infected with the H1N1 virus, although only about 18,000 people are known to have died from the disease. What researchers are now discovering is what swine flu leaves behind: a superpowered immune system with antibodies that can kill off any new flu virus, not just a return of H1N1. Recent research on nine swine flu survivors revealed that the infection had caused all their immune systems to go into overdrive, creating a huge range of flu antibodies that aren't needed to fight off swine flu but would be very useful if any number of other flu strains tried to invade the subjects' bodies. More common flu strains like the seasonal flu or the very mild flu virus used to create the flu vaccine don't activate this many antibodies, suggesting there's something unusual about H1N1 that triggers this powerful immune response. The power of the H1N1 immune response is extraordinary. According to the researchers, five of the types of antibodies isolated in their research would be enough to fight off all seasonal flu variations, the Spanish flu virus that killed as many as 50 million people in the pandemic of 1918, and a potentially deadly bird flu strain known as H5N1. The researchers say the uniqueness of the swine flu is what triggered this response. The immune system didn't immediately know what to do with the virus, so it started creating lots of different antibodies based on its memory of other flu viruses it had previously encountered. By the time the immune system found the right antibodies to fight off the swine flu, enough had been created to ward off all other influenza variants as well. We don't know yet whether the H1N1 vaccine also transferred these super immunity properties, although that's next on the researchers' to-do list. Oxford University virus expert Dr. Sarah Gilbert, this could well lead us to a universal flu vaccine, and in the relatively near future, too: "Many scientists are working to develop a vaccine that would protect against the many strains of flu virus. This work gives us more confidence that it will be possible to generate a universal flu vaccine. It will take at least five years before anything like this could be widely available." Five years is a long time to wait, but considering that as many as 500,000 people die every year from various flu strains, it seems like a universal vaccine is very much worth waiting for. |

So basically, H1N1 gave us root access to the flu. |

I think you'd be surprised. That thread is about your favorite Glade quotes, not your favorite Glade quotes that everyone will like too, isn't it? |

It was LK's and mine (mostly LK's, though). LK's original thread was limited to favotite quotes of 2009, then I suggested making a running quotes thread. But since her thread already had lots of quotes in it, my generalized Quote Bank thread died, and LK's original thread title dropped the "of 2009" part. And considering the title of the stickied thread is "Your Fave Glade Quotes"... |

I just let RNAi take care of it, hopefully it works. |

I put on a brave face, then look away and bite my lip, but have no obvious trouble at the time they stick the needle in me. Then I start seeing stars, like the blood is rushing away from my brain, and I frequently pass out within 5-10 minutes after getting any syringe stuck into me. (Funny, it takes that long.) Funny thing is, I get similar symptoms watching my kids get needles, which is terrible because I am trying to reassure them that its fine. I can't even watch someone get an injection on television. So no, I do not get the flu shot. |

I'm a baby about needles too. I'll take punches in the arm all day. Needles make me squirm and barely hurt. |

I have no problem getting shots, that doesn't bother me, its drawing blood that makes me pass out. And yeah, the Quotes thread is for whatever YOU think is memorable and quote-worthy, not just me or Colphax. What the heck is RNAi? I've only gotten the flu-shot twice and I've only had the flu a couple of times in my life (unrelated to the shot.) I did not get the H1N1 vaccine as I was preggers at that time, but my son got the swine flu and he ran a high fever for several days but no other symptoms...didn't even affect his appetite or anything. |

RNAi is short for RNA interference, which is the use of short RNA sequences (20-25 base pairs) as post-transcriptional silencing. Basically, you have a short RNA sequence that binds to the 3'untranslated region of a messenger RNA transcript, and either induces degradation or prevents translation, depending on the specific interference mechanism at play. RNA-based therapeutics are used in cancer treatments, cardiovascular therapies, and others- as are inhibitors of endogenous miRNA, which is the major player in humans RNAi response. RNAi based therapeutics can be used to "kick start" the bodies RNAi system to create new miRNAs or siRNAs (small interfering RNAs) which target viral RNA and prevent its transcription, halting viral replication. I just wasn't aware that there was really any native RNAi response to the virus without a therapeutic to kick start it- and the only therapeutics I know haven't made it into use in humans yet. |

Great, so the gov pushed us all to get the vaccine, and those that didn't are better off. Except for the 18,000 that died, of course.... |

Of course they did. Why would the government not want its people to get protected? They couldn't have known that actually getting the virus would make you a super human.

I used to get them when the Military mandated them. Now I just don't usually bother. There have been times when I did get them and still got sick, and many flu seasons have passed without getting sick when I had no flu shot. If my workplace is giving free flu shots and I'm in the area, I'll get one if it's convenient. |

I generally only have minor illnesses thanks to a fairly strong immune system, but today I woke up and felt kinda bleh. As the day wore on, it slowly got worse. Now I feel like I've been shot at and missed, and **** on and hit. FU sickness! |
