Bull sharks seen in flooded streets

TWO bull sharks have been spotted swimming past the McDonald’s restaurant in Goodna.

Goodna butcher Steve Bateman saw one of the sharks swimming through the flooded waters of Williams Street near his bucher’s shop in the St Ives shopping centre yesterday.

There were several reports of another shark spotted in Queen Street, the main street through Goodna.

Bull sharks have been spotted in the Goodna sections of the Bremer River previously, with fishermen regularly catching them from the Goodna boat ramp.

Ipswich councillor for the Goodna region Paul Tully said while it may sound almost too bizarre to be real, the shark sighting was valid.

“It would have swam several kilometres in from the river, across Evan Marginson Park and the motorway,” Cr Tully said.

“It’s definitely a first for Goodna, to have a shark in the main street.

“I know Steve (Bateman) and he wouldn’t say he saw a shark unless he really saw one.

“It’s not like there have been polar bears or crocodiles spotted.

“Bull sharks have been in Goodna for a long time in the Bremer.

“They are regularly in the Brisbane River and often swim up. I know a number of fishermen who have caught bull sharks.”

State Member for Bundamba Jo-Ann Miller also backed Mr Bateman’s bull shark sighting.

“Steve wouldn’t lie about something like that. He’s very well known in the community.”

Bull sharks are the third most likely shark to attack a human being. They are noted for their aggressive behaviour and often swim in shallow waters along coasts and rivers.

Mr Bateman was not available for comment.

Goodna was awash with water eight metres deep during the past 48 hours. The water receded dramatically overnight.

Police evacuated people from a large area of Goodna as large quantities of flammable gas spewed into the air yesterday.

Police said significant amounts of fuel had leaked into floodwaters from ruptured underground storage tanks at petrol stations near the St Ives shopping centre.

Seen yes, both at our aquariums and on the beachs. They are usually very far out, and during summer busy seasons there are volunteer helicoptor which patrol the beaches and let you know if one even gets semi close. They are kinda hard to see in the water though, normally just a little dot. Surfers who go more out to see gets the close encounters, and that I avoid hehe. Bull sharks are nothing though, I caught one fishing once... and there are baby sharks along all major river lines in Australia hehe. ps Shark meat makes the best fish and chips =P

Spoiler: HUNDREDS of sharks have been spotted off the Sunshine Coast north of Noosa, with some coming within 10m of the shore. The Sunshine Coast Rescue helicopter night crew said they spotted “hundreds” of sharks between Double Island Point and Teerwah on their return from a job at Fraser Island at about 8am. “Within that 70km stretch they saw literally hundreds of sharks,” air crew officer Rick Harvey said. The crew said there were more than 40 sharks in a 100m-long school at Teewah, 10km north of Noosa’s main beach, some of which were 5m long and believed to be tiger sharks. “They spent about 10 minutes in the area just watching the large amount of sharks just sitting off, then getting in amongst the fish and dividing them and having a real good feed,” Mr Harvey said. “The whole school was hovering about 20-50m offshore and at one stage one of the large sharks was in the shallows about 10m off shore.” But the shark alert hasn't put off beachgoers, with hundreds on Noosa's main beach today. While the rescue crews regularly sport sharks along that stretch of coast, they had never seen so many in such a short distance. “Those two guys have been working here for a long time, one of them more than 10 years, and he’s never seen so many before,” Mr Harvey said. The crew saw fisherman along the secluded stretch, close to where the shark entered the shallows. The sharks were believed to be chasing a school of tuna. I have a river outside my place but there's a couple of shallow bays before you get to me. So no big sharks, but we get the occasional small ones (about 1-2 foot?ish) that comes through. Mostly sharks are afraid of people and stay away, it's the jellyfish that you gotta look out for.
