I don't think there is the worst curse word ever. They are just words. I use them all. All the time. Very casually. So, it shocks me that I can be talking to someone and drop many f-bombs(sometimes every other word) but as soon as I say "****" there's something wrong. Why do you suppose that is? Why do some people consider the word **** worse than ****? It boggles the mind.

I would guess it is a matter of personal tastes.

I also have a serious aversion to using the C word. It just feels so much more crude than the other usual curses.

On the topic of the C-Word, I had an observation the other day.

When using various terms for male genitalia to refer to people, they all pretty much mean the same thing. Whether you call Corolinth a cock, a dick, a penis, etc...it always means the same thing.

But if when you use terms for female genitalia, the meaning varies greatly depending on which word you use. So if you call Corolinth a "pussy," it means he's a wimp. Call him a "twat," and it means he's a moron. Call him a "****," and it means he's a miserable son of a *****.

This inconsistency in the English vernacular baffles me.

I never made a distinction between the two but so many females are utterly offended by the C word that I have learned to shun it.

For me, most swears fall into one of maybe 2 or 3 degrees of "strength" or "nastiness". Notable exceptions are the "C word", which I simply don't use, and the "N word" which while not typically considered a swear, is equally as offensive as the "C word" and which I also don't use.

The perceived vulgarity of the "C-word" has always confused me too, considering its possible origins (whether the Germanic kunte or the Latin cunnus) make it the most technically accurate of the various slang terms for the same body part. Its modern english meaning has been in use for at least 800 years (see **** Lane).

There seems to be a push lately among feminists to reclaim the word "****." I'm not entirely sure what exactly this means, but if the end result is that people stop getting all offended at the use of the word, I wholeheartedly support their efforts.

Now, if it becomes like black people reclaiming the word "nigger," where women run around all day calling one another ****, but men get burned at the stake for uttering it, then **** them. Although not necessarily with my dick. Have you seen Andrea Dworkin?

Just think, though, that would make black women the most linguistically free people in America.

If nigger and **** are both offensive, does that mean **** is the sum, product, or arithmetic mean of their individual offensiveness?

This is an important question. If one views "offensive" as a negative quality, and **** becomes the product of its individual components, the final result ends up positive.

And, more importantly, Taly, if somebody views "offensive" as a positive quality, the product of the two is still positive! So no matter how worried you are about offending people, you can still use it!

I think it's possible that the aversion to both the N word and the C word is due to the inherent hatred we have attached them to. While you can say **** and have it be gender and racial agnostic, the N word is obviously very specifically race attached, and the C word is very specifically gender attached. That's my theory on why they are viewed as "worse curse words".

Obviously any word only has the power we attach to it, and they are all just words. Without any attachment though, all words are meaningless.

Aww, Darkroland, why so serious?

But yes, seriously, you're right. However, that still leaves the question of why "pussy" doesn't carry the hatred attachment, despite being gender specific, or why "dick" and "cock" don't carry much stigma at all.

Men think differently imho. We grow up smack talking each other and develop an immunity to verbal-insults.

Still doesn't explain the lack of offense given by "Pussy."

Seriously, it's like the worst curse word ever. No one ever gets offended at its use, and it never makes anyone feel better for saying it in the heat of anger.

Most men are infatuated with pussies. Perhaps use ostraconophobic homosexual men as a control group.

This thread made me think of Southpark...

Quote:
Mr. Garrison: OK, kids, let's start the day with a few new math problems. What is five times two? Come on children, don't be shy. Just give it your best shot. [Clyde raises his hand] Yes, Clyde?
Clyde: Twelve?
Mr. Garrison: OK. Now let's try to get an answer from someone who's not a complete retard. Anyone? Come on, don't be shy.
Kyle: I think I know the answer, Mr. Garrison.
Cartman: [mocking Kyle in high-pitched, gibberish voice]
Kyle: Shut up, fat boy!
Cartman: Aye, don't call me fat, ya **** Jew!
Mr. Garrison: Eric! Did you just say the F-word?
Cartman: Jew?
Kyle: No, he's talking about "****." You can't say "****" in school, you **** fat ***!
Mr. Garrison: Kyle!
Cartman: Why the **** not?
Mr. Garrison: Eric!
Stan: Dude, you just said **** again!
Mr. Garrison: Stanley!
Kenny: [muffled] ****.
Mr. Garrison: Kenny!
Cartman: What's the big deal? It doesn't hurt anybody! ****, ****!
Mr. Garrison: How would you like to go see the school counselor?
Cartman: How would you like to suck my balls?
[everyone gasps]
Mr. Garrison: [enraged] What did you say?!
Cartman: Oh, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. Actually, what I said was: [picks up a megaphone] "How would you like to suck my balls, Mr. Garrison?
[Garrison stands rooted to the spot, frozen with fury]
Stan: Holy ****, dude.

The answer is the same as with women. It depends on the person, and the situation.

There are no words in and of themselves that offend me. It's all about how those words are used around or toward me that determine if I'm offended.

When you call someone a pussy in reference to them being a wimp I think it is more in reference to a cat than female anatomy.

You can attack the individual, but as for one singular catch-all male word? Never heard one.
