There's a video at the link.

Cops: 6-year-old takes off in family's experimental helium-balloon craft

FORT COLLINS. Colo. - Authorities were trying to determine Thursday how to safely bring down a 6-year-old boy who reportedly clambered into his family's experimental balloon-powered aircraft and floated away from home, sheriff's officials said.

Ummm, shoot it?

This is pretty crazy.

If its mylar, a puncture in the skin could quickly lead to a catastrophic tear and a much faster than intended descent.

We've been watching this on the TV in the break room, and as my son is only 1 year younger, it kills me to think what the little boy is going through, not to mention the parents.

Pretty moot; looks like it's coming down, but it's moving quick ~25mph.

edit: Then the winds just died down, and the balloon came down...and no kid!

Poor kid. They should get a skydiver to rescue him.

The balloon just landed...the kid was not in it.

I have a bad feeling he fell out and this will end badly.

Barring the possibility he was never actually in the box, what else could have happened? Either a hoax or a dead kid. Sad.

I'm hoping it was a publicity stunt by his parents and that the kid was never in it...otherwise you might be right, Micheal. :(

I've seen reports that the family involved was once on Wife Swap. That in and of itself confirms a certain amount of attention-whoring, in my opinion.

Truly, I hope this is the case. I really don't wish the alternative on anyone.

I'm still holding out that the kid is hiding in fear of the spanking he's going to get for letting daddie's prized semi-scientific mylar balloon go bye bye.

Rock on!

I don't know why the thought of him falling out had me so flustered.

Thats worth rejoicing over anyway...how many times do you hear a missing kid story that is so dramatic and turns out to have a happy ending?
(He still should get his butt whipped though, lol!)

During a live interview, Falcon said he had heard his family calling his name.

"You did?" the boy's mother, Mayumi Heene, said.

"Why didn't you come out?" Richard Heene said.

Falcon answered, "You had said that we did this for a show."

The parents, of course, are vehemently denying it.

Sheriff: Charges will be filed in balloon saga

Quote:
Records show that police have responded to the house at least twice in the past year, including a possible domestic violence incident in February. No charges were filed.
Alderden said officials tried Saturday to persuade Mayumi Heene, 45, to go to a safe house, but she declined.
"We talked to her at length about domestic violence, about her safety, about her children's safety," the sheriff said. "We have a concern, but we didn't have enough that would allow us or child protective services to physically take the kids from that environment."
Alderden said the children were still with the parents Sunday morning, and child protective services had been contacted to investigate the children's well-being.
"Clearly, from all indications, Mr. Heene has somewhat of a temper," Alderden said.
As to the hoax that could end up with one or both in prison:

Thats messed up.

Update: The parents are pleading guilty. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/33881293/ns/us_news-life/?GT1=43001

Quote:
FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Colorado parents who reported their 6-year-old son floated away in a helium balloon in what authorities say was a hoax to drum up publicity for a TV show will both plead guilty to charges in the case, the attorney for the boy's father said Thursday.

Richard Heene, 48, will plead guilty to attempting to influence a public servant, a felony, his attorney David Lane said. Mayumi Heene, 45, will plead guilty to false reporting to authorities, a misdemeanor.

Prosecutors have agreed to allow both to serve probation sentences, Lane said. Prosecutors did not immediately return a phone message Thursday morning. Mayumi Heene's attorney, Lee Christian, also did not return a call.

According to the rest of the article, they are pleading guilty only because the mom is in danger of being deported back to Japan if she was convicted.

I hope they deport her anyway. They preyed on the good nature of humans to drum up publicity...

Deportation is a nice solution for this. Hell send him too.

I love it. Let's protect the children by placing them into a group home and separating them. This way, when they're raped or abused by the other children in the group home, they won't have their family to support them.

Perfect.

From my experience, knee jerk reactions tend to be narrow minded and short sighted.
