8.9, huge, but quite a ways off shore. They felt it, power is out in lots of places, check your favorite news site, its bound to have something.

No Godzilla sitings reported yet.

8 meter tsunami on its way in.

Other reports saying 4 meters when it hit Japan. Buildings still swaying half an hour after the quake.

This will be the big news story in the morning. Pray or whatever your passage of good energy is for the people of Japan, damage and casualties may be high.

Incredible, the damage, and the footage of the tsunami, etc. Gonna go double-check my earthquake supplies.

My thoughts go out to them.

Friend of mine in Tokyo is thankfully doing ok. He even has power and water... the former especially good since he was in an elevator when it hit. Granted, Tokyo isn't too close to where the earthquake was centered, but the trains were stopped and a pretty big fire broke out in one place.

There was a page on Wikipedia within an hour or so that I saw, probably much sooner knowing how zealous people are at creating Wikipedia pages. It speaks of pretty major damage up near Sendai, including a whole town (or really, a loose conglomeration of a bunch of small towns in the same area) being totally destroyed. Scary stuff.

#Tokyo Electric Power Co: pressure inside reactor at its Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear plant rising; risk of radiation leak, from Reuters

U.S. delivers coolant to Japan nuclear plant: Clinton
Quote:
(Reuters) - The United States has transported coolant to a Japanese nuclear plant affected by a massive earthquake and will continue to assist Japan, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Friday.

"We just had our Air Force assets in Japan transport some really important coolant to one of the nuclear plants," Clinton said at a meeting of the President's Export Council.

"You know Japan is very reliant on nuclear power and they have very high engineering standards but one of their plants came under a lot of stress with the earthquake and didn't have enough coolant," Clinton said.

Actually, I half-expect some folks, when this is all settled, to blame the cancellation of the March 2011 Sumo tournament due to scandal. It was supposed to start on Sunday. Can't anger the gods, ya know?!

Hope your friend is okay Killuas. I heard from a friend of mine in Japan that he and his family are okay. After he was finally out of his office building in Tokyo he walked back home to Saitama

She is good. Although another friend of mine his old boss from Honda was killed, very sad. The whole thing was very surreal to watch.

I'm hearing from various sources that there was an explosion at one of the nuclear power plants.

So far no announcements of major melt downs, but I suspect it is inevitable. I just hope that they are able to contain it and it doesn't turn into a global catastrophe....

Both are ok and headed to her parent's summer home in Nagoya, which seems to be the safest place in Japan at the moment. They should be able to come home in about a week; maybe sooner.
