I have noticed that my Metformin has started to come with a sticker saying that a medical ID of some form should be worn because I am on this medicine.

How important are these medical IDs really? Is it a good idea to get one?

I would say get one. You just never know, what if you have an adverse reaction to something, or get into an accident and are unconscious or your diabetes causes you to go into a coma or any number of things. In all of those situations the people helping you would be able to do a much better job if they know and it may even save your life. A lot of upside and no downside I can see from having one and wearing it.

If you are ever incapacitated (accident, etc...), it's important for whoever is treating you to know you are Type 2 Diabetic, and on blood sugar reducing meds. It will be considered during triage, and when treatment decisions are made.

It's probably a good idea to have one, at least until government mandated sub-dermal RDID medical records are in full effect. =p

When I was in the military they were testing a program to have medical records stored in your military ID card. There were obviously a lot of privacy concerns with this and if you didn't have it with you, or it was destroyed, it would do much good. I retired before the study was finished. Not sure if it went anywhere. My retiree ID card is still the old fashioned kind =)

Edit: You might check with your insurance company. They may have a program of some kind for these.

Also, there are a lot of clever and trendy idea's for these things now, besides the clunky bracelet that a lot of folks abhor.

Last I knew the medical records on the CAC card thing was on indefinite hold due to technical practibility reasons.

Wearing the medical ID is a very good idea. I advise it, though it falls into the category of do as I say, not as I do. I don't wear one. I've been diabetic for over fifteen years and yeah, I should. It hasn't been an issue, yet.

If you do so opt, make sure it is where a paramedic will find it quickly if you aren't conscious, wrist or chest is good.

Pretty much it's insurance for the worst case scenario, which is hard to imagine when you are young and/or in relatively good health. it's a lot easier for someone with very brittle diabetes control to think they might need a medical ID.

But if that worst case scenario does happen, where you are suddenly unconscious because of a car accident or something similar, it's always a good to let your medical team know what chronic medical conditions you have and what meds you are taking for them. Off the top of my head, I know that metformin and MRI contrast taken together will potentially destroy your kidneys if the metformin isn't stopped for 48 to 72 hours after getting the MRI.

At the very least, DS, carry a card in your wallet and put emergency info into your cell phone. When trauma patients come into ED that information is very useful if you are unconscious.

My nephew ( juvenile diabetes) recently got the tattoo on his wrist because he was always losing the bracelets. As soon as I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes I ordered a Medic Alert bracelet that I never remove (I can take it off myself but need help to put it back on...it's a PITA in airports ) I really should have got one many years ago, due to my penicillin and cephalexin allergies.

DS and Mike: No problem . I may not yet be as knowledgeable as Kirra so far as medical stuff goes (but I'm working on it!), but I have picked up a few things here and there pushing paper at the hospital as long as I have!

Hmm, this is the first time I have ever considered getting a tattoo. I am allergic to amoxicillin, but I also have a contact nickle allergy. That makes me allergic to almost every type of jewelry, except for sterling silver. I have yet to find a sterling silver alert bracelet.
