So, how do you make a living? What do you generally tend to do all day when you're working?

Just curious :)

Me? I'm currently unemployed, and living on the government dole. Looking for, but not finding a job.

I do tech support.

Having been relatively successful, I answer questions and suggest solutions and write articles.

Most of my work is done via e-mail (or e-mail based tools) and chat.

I attend an average of a meeting a day and handle a variety of consultations via chat or walk up to my desk/cubicle in addition to those measurable escalations / edits / etc.

I work on developing the Broadband Network Gateway that will go on a next-gen edge router that'll be sold to major ISPs globally. Specifically I own the part that decides the IP addresses that end users will get assigned through DHCP or PPPoE. Work is very relaxed and I can work from home as much as I want. I really like my job. The people in my team are all double my age, with the exception of one, but they're pretty cool.

Generally I browse the Internet a lot at work unless something really needs to be done. I did spend all of Sunday working on a new feature, though, coding the entire day straight. Sometimes I don't do much at all in the office so I make up for it on the weekends.

I do 'level 2' technical support for a large retail corporation, supporting everything electronic in the store is I guess the best way to describe. We have knowledge articles for EAS pedastals, flatbed scanners, Walls of Eye's (3x3 60" TV Display), intercom systems, phone systems etc.. help desk takes calls on everything, I dont think I have ever worked on an EAS pedastal for example. On a daily basis, I work in an old converted warehouse, converted to an office building, I come in at 3pm-11pm, by between 4:30-6pm the building clears out and I am by myself in a cubicle, with a security guard at there post downstairs, with no windows. After 6pm, nothing happens, stores are busy and dont call for stupid crap.

Usually work involves alot of writing of knowledge articles for the help desk, we keep the knowledgebase up to date, search for XX error there will be step by step instructions on how to fix it, and who to get in touch with if doesnt work. Our help desk take incoming calls and escalate what we dont want them touching cause of regulations (i.e HIPAA for pharmacy) in a ticketing system, stuff they cant resolve, etc we then work the cases and call stores back. Our Top 20 stores usually call in directly, for 'catastrophic' failures, POS system down, main DB server, etc. Involves everything from Suse 3.5 :) To Windows 7 on our new builds. We have Dual 386 33MHZ Database servers, up to Dell 2600 Powerware's. Typical day is probably 5-6 tickets and 5 hours of boredom....I do get to work from home on Friday and Sunday's though, weekend's are even slower, Im lucky to get 2 tickets on a Sunday.

A wide assortment of tasks, most dealing with policy and legislation for either co-occurring disorders or senior citizens, sometimes a combination of the two. Once in a while I write an article because my boss has said, "I dunno. I'll ask somebody." Really, he says that and I usually get the assignment.

Three times so far this year I've been asked a question the folks in IT couldn't answer - for good reason. they install the software, they don't use most of it. I look bright because I use most of it and can answer questions without making the other user feel like an idiot.

A lot of the time I sit at my desk and read articles on what I do or will be doing. Something this specialized there is a lot to keep up on.

I haven't worked outside of the home in 18 years, ever since my hubby asked me to quit my two part-time jobs and stay home with our son so hubby could do side jobs with his brother on weekends. Those two part-time jobs were a school crossing guard for the SJPD and a tour guide at the Winchester Mystery House. I still miss working as a tour guide though...may have to go back again someday...I love that house! :)

Student, at the moment, which means I procrastinate a lot!...

I start an internship in May. I'm not sure on the exact details, but I'll be working with a software company updating one of their programs to work with current OSes. I think it's currently designed for Windows 2000 server, or something like that. I also believe it will be using Borland Delphi, which kind of makes me cry, but I guess it will be interesting if nothing else.

Felt all pumped at being half-decent at SQL, then pow... Borland Delphi. It doesn't even look like a proper language! And all these in-IDE forms that write code for you... ick. We'll see. I'm getting paid for it, even a goodly bit more than minimum wage, so I can't complain too much. And finally contributing to society might just feel nice. Not that I haven't wanted to for awhile now... but that's another story.

I used to watch him, but holy **** is he boring. I mainly watch Husky. I watch to be entertained. HDStarcraft and Day9 and the rest are just way too analytical. Husky seems genuinely excited to be casting games and he's just hilarious.

Husky is pretty funny but after a while he gets annoying..especially his "H to the usky Husky" intro. I like HD Starcraft...but same thing, he gets annoying too sometimes.

There was one episode of PsyStarcraft where he was yelling at his deaf roomate for crinkling a bag of chips. That was pure comedy gold! Psy is hilarious.

I am on the escalation management pilot for major pharma. I pretty much wait till someone or the process screws up and then wade in and fix both with lots o documentation to see that it doesn't happen again.

I spend my morning looking at job websites and feeling shitty that there is nothing, sitting and waiting for that fortune 500 company to call me back after a 5 hour interview 2 months ago and several follow up calls to say "we're still looking", then I sit in front of the computer playing frontierville and waiting for someone to post on the Glade.
In the afternoon, I go to work for the vet clinic for a few hours alternating between happy I get to pet dogs all day and occasionally assist in surgery, and pissed off that I'm only making $7/hr (as opposed to the $20/hr I was making a little over a year ago) and spend the majority of my 4 hours there each day cleaning up dog poo and mopping floors and emptying trash and looking for something else to do to keep me occupied while I'm there.

Up until March of last year, I had been doing helpdesk for almost 5 years (Call center only). I had a real crisis in my life and hit the proverbial wall.

For the past 4 months, I have been working at another company as a contractor, again in a helpdesk role. THis time it is primarily deskside support with some Jr. network admin type stuff built in. I assist users with varied PC and network problems, image PCs and build user profiles, create and administer network and email accounts....

Greatest thing about this and coupled with my crisis last year is that, whether or not I eventually get hired on by this company, I am taking this experience and counting on it to help me progress into a new position hopefully doing the same thing when the time comes. This job has been one of the best things for my career ever. I am finally getting on the job experience rather than rotting away in a call center. That burned me out worse than I could have ever realized it would.

IT support stuff. When it's busy, it's busy. When it's not, it's not. Not a lot of middle ground.

I like to relax when I go home. Enjoy playing games on pc/console or getting LK to play some MTG. Wish I had a regular basketball pick up game to get out of the house more. Try to go for walks when I can, enjoy listening to music I when I do. Love being silly with the wife.
