Thoughts?

VW GTI '11
2.0L 200hp, 6sp manual
21/31 mpg

Went to see one yesterday and was really impressed. I am very seriously considering trading up my Civic, which I love, for something a little more sporty.

I agree...it is indeed a car.

Looks semi-functional, bet it gets decent gas mileage and will run for a long time.

Insurance costs?

While VW does put out a diesel version of the GTI (called the GTD) I don't think turbo diesel is available. The diesel versions tend to be hard to get hold of and dealer markup is not very negotiable, here in California anyway.

I prefer the Jetta Diesel and consider Low-pro tires to be offensive to common sense and design quality. However, I'm behind the times, not in, etc. Do as you like, it is your car and your sense of style you need to be worried about.

The Volvo C30's are in the same class as those Lenas and possibly worth a look.

Only thing I haven't looked at yet, but the actual car costs would be quite a bit lower than I'm already paying (about $100 less/mo), so there would be some leeway.

Check the median repair costs per year, insurance costs, etc. ...

Some VWs are notoriously fickle and finicky beasts. Otherwise, use your own best judgment.

Butt ugly and looks like a roller skate. Your Civic is much classier than this.

I don't think this is really sporty, Lenas, but that's IMO.

I like this for sporty

Sit inside one and say that again. My Civic is dog **** compared to this car.

Nice car but terrible MPG and over my price range for the features I want right now. Oh and I should mention that the VW goes 0-60 in the same time :p

I don't care about the inside, homes. The outside is ugly. Pay off all your debt first and then buy your car.

I did a lot of research on this, thought about it very carefully, and decided it was not a good buy. Turns out, the VW GTI is not a Jeep.

And much better looking. ;)

But f you're gonna get a GTi, get this one.

I looked up the Volvo C30 but I think it looks bad. The design of the backend is a deal-breaker and the interior design is pretty mediocre.

Decent enough for me, considering I don't actually do much driving. Wouldn't be much of a change considering it's pretty much what I get in my Civic now.

Remember, they changed the test a couple of years ago. It dropped the official gas mileage for nearly every vehicle.

Under the new test, your WRX would likely be much lower.

The VW Golf TDi is perhaps one of the most versatile vehicles one could buy. And with a gut wrenching 240+ ft-lbs of torque, it's deceptively quick. If you frequently make road trips at 80+ MPH, this is, in my opinion, the best road trip vehicle one could own. And the diesels are like sledgehammers ... they just don't break.

That said, the GTi is alright. I'd go with the R32 if it weren't for the terrible reliability of the VR6 engine.

My STi cost me less in insurance than a Honda Civic and still got over 22mpg observed, not EPA grading. And I could drive through a foot of snow with all season M+S tires.
